It is even more exciting when I look at you and see shining faces. I am happy to note that I am in the midst of young men and women who are full of life. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation and so we are. Mahatma Gandhi once said that health is the real wealth and not silver and gold that we seek.

Foods we eat determine our health conditions. We all love soft drinks and sweets, and I know before this day ends, most of you will eat or drink manufactured products with added sugar. But have you ever cared about the amount of sugar you eat? About two years ago, I started realizing that I was gaining weight. I did not like it. I went to a nutritionist for consultation. The nutritionist told me to write down my daily diet. When she looked at the list of foods I had been taking, I saw her shook her head. I realized something was wrong. "You take too much sugar," she said. I loved sugar and I still do, I know you still do love it and even some of you can't imagine how they can survive without it. But the bitter truth is, too much sugar in our bodies is harmful to our health. Today, I stand here to make awareness of the dangers we expose ourselves into when we consume too much sugar.

When I walked on this stage I realized that most of you were smiling. Also, I noted that it was a beautiful day because a beautiful day starts with a smile. A smile makes us feel more confident to challenge the world. But I cannot imagine if you could gain much confidence to smile if you did not have teeth. Personally, I am not sure whether I could stand here today to deliver a speech being toothless. When I was young, my mother always warned me that candy could rotten my teeth. Sometimes I hardly believed her. But she always insisted that I had to stop eating too much candy. Too much sugar is an enemy to our dental health. The bacteria that live on the teeth feed on the sugars we eat and causes decay. I believe none among us is ready to lose her teeth any time soon. If you care about your teeth then you have to take care of the amount of sure you take.

Secondly, Just as I had mentioned, too much sugar in your body will lead to weight gain. Today many people attend gyms to lose weight but fail to watch on what they feed. Exercises will not help us if we do not regulate the amount of sugar we eat. Sugars contain more calories that lead to weight. Most young men want to look masculine and women want to have a good body shape. It will remain to be a dream that never came true to people who consume too much sugar. Besides, extreme sugars in the body could lead to obesity. If any off you will be obese in the future then you will have no one to blame.

Additionally, we are filled with fear at the mention of heart diseases. The heart disorders are not only expensive to treat but also fatal. If we could be cautious enough about the sugars we take we could be on a safe side. A research conducted by CDC that is a relationship between the amount of sugar that people consume and the increase the rate of cardiovascular disorder. People who get 17% to 21 % of calories from sugar are susceptible to heart problems than people who only take about 8% of calories from sugars. When I mentioned death, I realized many of you worried, but you need not worry, what you should do is to regulate the amount of sugar that you take every day.

Moreover, we hate to be overburdened with workloads. In fact, I have never been friendly to teachers who give too many assignments. That doesn't mean that I am lazy, I am just unproductive when I am too tired. When we strain our bodies we become exhausted we become ineffective. But have you ever thought what can happen if you overwork your organs and body systems? The body regulated the sugar we take every day. The extreme sugar leads to weight gain and as a result, one may get diabetes 2. As you know, when you have diabetes you no longer feed on sugary foods. If you want to enjoy sugar for the rest of your life regulate the amount you consume today.

Sexual health is essential especially to us young people. I can see you are now more attentive because is an important subject in life. Men will live a sour life when they become sexually inactive. Many relationships have come to an end as a result of men's inadequate sexual prowess. High levels of blood sugar make men become impotent. High blood sugar affects the circulatory system and therefore, they cannot keep an erection. I believe that people in this room are sexually active, but if we care about our relationships today and in the future then we need to control the sugar intake.

We all want to look young for the rest of our lives. We invest so much in the diets and exercises to make our bodies look younger. Extreme consumption of too much sugar will only make us age faster. I can't imagine meeting anyone of you wrinkled at the age below forty. If happen to meet one, I will know you never listened to my advice. It will be too late by then. Excessive sugars create molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGES). The molecules age your skin. Do you want a healthier and youthful skin? Avoid sugar like venom.

Conclusion

To sum it up, I believe that now we understand why we need to be cautious about the number of sugars we consume. Sugars may be so sweet when we take them but they have dire consequences to our health. Our health today is equally important as that of tomorrow. Our health in the future depends on the foods we eat today. I appreciate the time you have given me but I hope I have saved you more time that you could have spent to seek medical attention for health problems related to excessive intake of sugars. Thank you and God bless as you plan to avoid sugar.
