As it has always been the case, the inauguration of any new President in any given country is a period of striking a balance between the maintenance of the national legacy and the promise of a new beginning. It is always a period of national healing between the winners and the losers as the incoming President pass his message to the anxious citizens. The case was no different during the inauguration speech by President Donald Trump. Known for his fiery speeches, this one was a bit different. It presented him with an opportunity to sum up what his campaign speech was all about; going against the conventions of national politics and doing things differently. As an outsider candidate, his elections was one that had defied all the expectations of the Washington politics and this he attributed to the people of the United States whom he acknowledged wield much power. The statement today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington DC. It was an affirmation that his administration was going to work relentlessly to serve the interests of the American and not the party politics that are synonymous with Washington DC. This showed that he fully acknowledged the significance and power the people had in national politics. Despite the speech being labeled as propagating protectionism, it is clear that there was a message of hope in the speech. The speech clearly highlighted that Trump had recognized that it is only a small group that was reaping in the rewards of power and wealth in the Country at the expense of the Americans citizens. He thus offered a leaf of hope by promising to change all that and ensure that all his efforts would be directed towards ensuring that all workers and families in America benefit from all decisions made. A careful analysis of the speech however raises some concerned over the relationship between America and other nations. Trumps protectionist agenda was likely to put the country at logger heads with some of Americas trading partners such as China and the European nations. No economy has ever succeeded by adopting a protectionist approach especially in the dawn of the free market economy. There should be some collaborations among nations as protectionism might prove to be too costly especially where production of some products that other nations have comparative advantage over the USA.

There are a wide range of statements and topics that appear in President Trumps inauguration address. It is however of particular interest to learn more about the topic of protectionist and how far it can go in the dawn of free market economies where nations have to collaborate economically. The topic is a good case for study based on the nature of Trumps protectionism message which seemed to be the highlight of the speech. Understanding it would offer a clear understanding of the benefits and challenges associated with protectionism in the global economy.
