It is apparent that climate change is a challenge in the modern society, in this relation, the same has been the topic of discussion of environmental experts with the view of disseminating ideas of tackling the same to conserve the environment. There are various articles that talk on how to combat climatic change in the modern society to help in the prevention of the detrimental effects that come with the same and help in the conservation of the environment. One of the articles that enlightens the public on climate change and ways of combating the challenge is published in The New York Times. The article On Climate Change, Even States in Forefront Are Falling Short, by Eduardo Porter was published on 17th January 2017 highlights the challenges that states face in their attempts to prevent climate change but acknowledge steps that that state of California has taken to manage such.
The article highlights that the strong policies in the state is the main causal solution to combating climate change, and this is evident in the effectiveness of the strong environmental policies in California in combating climate change. In this manner, the Senate State Leader highlights the benefits of strong policies in the state and how it the state legislature has rolled out policies to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the state 40 percent below the levels in the year 1990 by the year 2030. Governor Jerry Brown submits that the strong policies in California is the main reason behind the successful combating of environmental changes. Additionally, stakes remain high as the state plans to extend its environmental policies nationally to help in the decarbonization of the American economy to prevent environmental change. In addition to the plans of the state policies to promote decarbonization of the country, there are plans to encourage building of nuclear plants that would help in the provision of zero-carbon power.
The strong policies in the state makes the California to rank third-lowest in terms of carbon dioxide emissions per person where it ranks follows only District of Columbia and New York. The use of the policies is what made the state of California to succeed in the deployment of wind turbines and solar panels which has led to reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide gas by 26.6 percent between the year 2000 and the year 2014. In this relation, there is the need for state to formulate policies that are effective in combating climatic change and help in preservation of the environment. Additionally, the effectiveness of policies in combating climatic change is evident in that despite cutting of hydroelectric power supply in the state, California has been able to make choices to make the use of solar energy a success in the state thereby helping to improve the quality of life at the same time helping in preventing climate change.
PricewaterhouseCoopers posit that to ensure that global temperature dose not rise to more than 3.6 degrees, which is the tolerable limits, there is the need to reduce carbon intensity in the global economy by 6.3 percent annually between the year 2017 and the year 2030 and which is only possible through the formulation of relevant policies as witnessed in California. Such means that the United States need to encourage formulation of policies that would help in preventing climate change and helps in the preservation of the environment.
