Introduction

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas of the body fails to produce insulin or the body becomes unable to utilize the insulin it makes. Insulin is a hormone that is secreted by the pancreas that allows glucose present in the food eaten to pass into the bloodstream to the cells of the body where glucose is converted in to energy through a biological process. The inability of the person to produce insulin or use it effectively results to a high a raise in the level of glucose in the blood system, a condition known as hyperglycemia. These high levels of glucose cause some damages in the body and failure of different organs. According to WHO action plan, diabetes is one of the diseases that cause impairment with an estimated 10% of total impairments in the world caused by diabetes. In Qatar, Diabetes together with cancer is the leading causes of sickness and deaths with the main causes related to lifestyle and genetics. There are three main types of diabetes namely, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. The paper shall discuss the main causes of diabetes in Qatar, and the effects it has on the body organs of the patients.

Thesis statement: lifestyle factors such as lack of physical exercise and eating high levels of sugars causes obesity which is one of the main causes of diabetes. More so, people whose parents had this type of disease are at a higher risk of diabetes.

Qatar is one of the Arab countries that are encountering rapid socio-economic developments recently. These developments has led to a change in lifestyle among the community which has been influenced by easy availability of fast food and increased use of personal vehicles as the main mode of transport which has reduced the physical activeness of the people. This has led to increased chances of obesity levels that raise the risk of diabetes occurrence. According to the Qatar's national survey that was conducted in the country in 2012, the levels of diabetes occurrence among the citizens was 16.7%, relatively higher than a previous survey done by the same body in 2006, which was 11.6%. The results show that lifestyle change impact on obesity, which increases potent occurrence of Diabetes type 2 (Report: Qatar 2008). Majority of adults in Qatar are obese, this has seen about 20% of the population being diagnosed with this disease, this is according to the Qatar Diabetes Association of Qatar foundation.

Though diabetes is not inherited through genes, individuals whose parents had diabetic conditions are at a higher risk of getting the same health condition. This is as a result of predisposition of the body to the diabetic conditions that require a certain environmental condition to trigger it. It is clear that people on the same lineage of genetics share the same environment. They have a common lifestyle (Global Report on Diabetes 2016). Due to the high level of diabetic conditions in Qatar, many people sires have been predisposed to diabetes in this way. Families in Qatar share same environment and lifestyles which now triggers diabetes. This has also led to the high increase in this disease among Qataris.

Diabetes in Qatar has resulted to increase in the risk of heart diseases in Qatar. Almost a half of the diabetic people in this country die as a result of cardiovascular diseases. Increase in diabetic conditions in this country has led to increase of deaths associated with it. Therefore, about 10% of adults in Qatar are likely to die due do heart diseases, a half of the 20% people of the total diabetic number of adult Qataris.
