Advantages of using discovering learning
The outcome of this type of learning is developing the art of thinking and creating the ability to invent things for oneself. It also involves the interaction between the basic human capabilities and the culturally invented technologies that serve as amplifiers of these capabilities. It supports an active engagement between the learner and the learning process hence improving attention and fosters curiosity. It is highly motivational since it allows individuals the opportunity to experiment and discover things for themselves. Moreover, discovery learning helps to build a learners prior knowledge and understanding. Finally, it results in the development of episodic memory, one that allows a learner to connect information to events which create stimuli for remembering the information.
Disadvantages of discovery learning
When there is no initial framework provided, discovery learning can easily confuse the learner. It may also limit the practice of the students. To some extent, it is inefficient since it consumes a lot of time that would have otherwise been used to carry out other activities. In additional it requires the teacher or instructor to get prepared to correct the mistakes done by the students during learning.
Learning how to learn is the goal aimed at by discovery learning. It is best when used to teach students past ninth grade since they can be able to figure out things on their own as compared to their fellow junior students. It is also applicable since the students have the knowledge to deduce information and have research skills, inductive and deductive learning.
Expository theory of learning
It involves the use of direct instruction where the teacher is the major provider of information, giving theories, ideas, and facts to the students. The method of learning dictates that the teacher provides the students with not only the necessary information but goes a further step to help the students make connections from one concept to another. The teacher will also go further and explain the principles, illustrate them, unfold their implications and give problem solutions. It is commonly used to teach students in their early years of learning since they wholly depend on the teachers guidance and information. There is also the belief that at this stage the kid cannot possibly figure out anything by him or herself.
Advantages of expository learning
Expository learning has its merits in that it gives the teacher complete control of the lessons. He or she guides the discussion and calls the students to answer questions and ask whatever they did not get during the teaching process. It also provides a benefit to the auditory learner that does well while listening to instructions as compared to while figuring things out on her own. The students and the teacher will also cover less time to cover so many things as it would have been the case with discovery learning.
Disadvantages of expository learning
On the other hand, the mode of learning puts the kid at a disadvantage since he or she does not take an active part in the learning procedure and also denies him or her, the opportunity to gain deductive skills, critical thinking skills. Most importantly the kid will never in his or her education time do the learning process by himself since he or she will always rely on information given to him or her other than the one he or she can deduce on her own. The slow learners are also most likely to get lost in the learning process hence benefit less, as the teacher will always take more interest with the kids that get whatever he or she teaches faster. Most of the students will lose interest in the classrooms for listening to long lectures. Not unless the lessons actively involve the students, an example being a mathematic lesson, the students will engage in lots of day-dreaming.

As explained in the sections containing the learning methods, it is clear that in the first lesson design, the teacher does the least amount of work since he or she has allowed the kid to explore for him or herself the different kind and categories of animals. The students knowledge on animals is to aid him or her to do the assignment at stake and as a result understand the habitats of animals. Since there is minimal involvement by the teacher in discovering the habitats, the kid has to go an extra mile to do some research on animals. Assuming that they had already tackled the different categories of animals i.e. wild and tamed, it will be easier for the kid to assign each animals habitat, be it air, land or water. After the identification, the teacher goes an extra mile in wanting the kid to draw the animals in their possible habitats. After the kid has tackled the exercise, the teacher now comes in to access the students work. In case there are corrections to be made, the teacher helps with that. If at all the kid was successful in the assignment, the teacher may move on to the next lesson. It is worth noting that the teachers involvement in discovery learning is very minimal. The teacher acts more like an approval as compared to the expected role of guiding the students.
In the lesson design for expository learning, the teacher goes an extra mile of providing a reference for the lesson unlike in the former design. In this case, the two textbooks and the act teaching are the guides in the learning. The teacher will go into lengths of explaining to the kids the different kind of animals, their classifications, possible habitats and assign each of the animals its habitats. To help the students remember, the teacher goes an extra mile to draw the animals in their habitats and then presents the drawing to the children. What the students are to do in this case is to sit, listen and probably take notes on the topic.
At the end of the day, the students from both classes will have learnt the topic on animal habitats but in different ways. The impacts made by the two learning processes will also be different.
