Tina was a well-educated ambitious girl from a Baptist Christian family. Her parents had seen her through the university and even were very instrumental in getting her a job in one of the biggest telecommunication networks in the country. Life seemed as good as it gets but deep down Tina felt lonely as she had no boyfriend. Men shied away from her mainly due to her success but most due to her faith.

On one fateful day during a wedding event, someone did approach her in a manner she had never experienced. He was a tall fairly handsome young man well groomed soft spoken but a rebel at the same time. This man had finally reached her heart. It took only days for them to exchange contacts thats when Tina discovered she did not know this gentlemans name. That was how much she had fallen in love. On asking, the gentleman said, My name is Tom. Tom quickly became Tinas obsession taking each word he said as the gospel truth.

They became an item even sharing keys to both their houses. Life was perfect, and Tina stopped going to church as they were pestering her about living with Tom. They took joint bank accounts, but Tom managed most of their savings as he was in the financial sector. The next six months saw both of them getting into a dependent relationship where Tom controlled most of the aspects of the house and way of life. To Tina, this was letting her man be the head, and it did not bother her.

Things started to drastically change when Tom came home late in the night drunk and bleeding. Hours before he was not picking her calls ant this worried Tina not knowing what had happened. Upon confronting him, Tom dismissed her saying it will not happen again and the injury was just an accident nothing major. Another day Tom used the majority of his salary in a bar drinking and marrying with his friend. Situations started mounting up until when Tina got pregnant. Tom seemed over the moon and even escorted Tina to the clinic. It seemed Tom would finally settle leaving his wild lifestyle to help raise his child. During the pregnancy, Tom could disappear time after time and even was caught cheating. Tina threatened to leave him, but he apologized and swore on his life that he would change. In the moment of despair, he enrolled in a rehabilitation center and was there till the baby was born.

Life was normal for a while until Tom now became violent in his response. Within a year Tom had changed into something else, not a charming person as he was someone to be feared. When now Tina felt she had put up with a lot of Toms misbehavior, she opted to leave. One evening she packed all her bags including her childs necessities and was in the process of leaving with the car when Tom appeared from nowhere and blocked her way out, he jumped out of his vehicle with anger on his face. Seeing this Tina locked the windows of her car but Tom broke the window and dragged her out by the neck. Tom gave a beating in front of the baby.

The police soon arrived and arrested Tom. In jail, Tom threatened Tina about the savings in the account. Tom had moved the money leaving the account with nothing. Tina dropped the charges in fear of Toms words. Back at home, Tom tightened his grip on Tina to appoint where she could not make any friends in that neighborhood or at work. She persevered and tolerated Tom to a point where she did not have a say. Tom himself was becoming even bolder in his torments, and the hitting became severe and also included the baby thats when Tina decided to leave without anything. She could not go home as she had not spoken to her parents for a while since their unofficial marriage. She was also afraid of home and how the family would look at her as she now had a baby out of wedlock.

Running from Toms apartment, Tina called all the refuge shelters around and found one. Tina managed to turn her life around quitting her job and getting another that was equally paying in another part of the country. She bought a new house and started making friends in a long time. During this period, she heard that Tom was arrested for drunk driving and assaulting a police officer. After two years Tom had finally tracked her down and was insisting on seeing his child. She showed Tom where she lived, and Tom soon after started coming there drunk and shouting. When Tina did not open the door, he stoned the house breaking windows and uprooting the flowers outside. Tina learning from her mistakes took Tom to court and managed to get a restraining order.

Domestic violence does not discriminate; it affects even the elite in the society. The best way is to come out and get help before relationships turn abusive.
