Mending the wall itself is an irony, the speaker sees no significant of the wall where there is no livestock to be contained, meaning only apples and pines held. He does not like the wall and believes that wall should not be rebuild for the sake of construction. The observer holds an idea that other people do not like the plan since an intended gap and border appears for no reason. The idea seems to be perceived differently by other neighbors who believe the wall is necessary and it leads to a good relationship. During wall construction, he even goes ahead to convince the neighbor how the wall means nothing to him. In the situations when the neighbor disagrees he calls him old fashioned and traditional conservative. The wall is used as a mode that helps to build a good relationship between the speaker and the narrator. The real meaning of the wall is a two-way barrier that people create in their life, that is, both physical and emotion. One side of the definition is where the neighbor of the speakers sees that the wall keeps a good relationship, Good fences makes good neighbors, while the emotional barriers stand between them. No one speaks with the other one till mending day and that what the wall commemorates.

For the side of the sound barrier keep a good relationship and goes on to believe the idea he has is the best compared to that of the speaker; who sees deeper implications of the wall. Usage of trees reflected back in the bible where trees are likened with knowledge; roots symbolizes the old culture, religion, and civilization of the blacks.

He narrates the suffering that our ancestors endured during enslavement and the fight for freedom during the civil wars. The similarities found in all rivers resemble the equality that all people are equal everywhere in the world as the rivers are. Hence, the significance of the poem was to keep the strength of African and African American high and that they should not sit and observe right being violated because of race differences.
