In the classical period, a civilization arose in the city of Vienna. In fact, the city of Vienna is regarded as a cultural capital of Austria. It was designated as the capital of Austria in 1918. Austria was one of the 4 states containing Habsburgs the Multi Empire. Classical period began around the year 1750 and ended around 1830. This paper seeks to provide the cultural development that occurred in Vienna in the 18th century.
Why Vienna was an important cultural center during the classical period
Vienna attracted many composers from across Europe during the 18th century. Music and cultural development in the subject field of arts and architecture occurred during the 18th century. Development in opera style and theater were noticed during the classical period (Kamien, Roger and Anita, 2008). Cultural means development and cultivation. Cultural center thus means the study of the objects that developed and happened in Vienna and the study of the civilization of that particular time.
Vienna was under the threat of the Turks though Austria defeated them and drove them away back to Hungary. Vienna was a nucleus center of Habsburg Empire, and therefore the city renowned historical significance. Maria Theresa, the daughter of Charles VI Archduke, was born in Vienna. Maria was regarded as one of the greatest of the Habsburgs rules. Maria helped the growth of the industry as she reduced the taxes of products, improved the economy, spread education, reformed the legal and army system, and contributed to the development of classical music (Kamien, Roger and Anita, 2008). She presented Vienna with fort performances of the Glucks innovations opera Eurydice and Orpheus. Joseph II secularized Vienna's religious properties.
Austrias economy was going well, and thus the residents turned to the growth of arts and gave education significance. The cultural development made Vienna the capital of Europe and a Cultural Center. The major elements of civilization developed during the classical period in Vienna were architecture, theater, music, and other arts like sculpture and painting.
Intellectual climate of the Age of Enlightenment
There was a great development in the theater as Vienna became a city of religious drama. Music accompanied Viennas people in their daily chores, and most of them were very religious. The people of Vienna were released from religiosity by music. Vienna hosted critical representatives of the great European traditional Thus it was characterized as the capital of serious music (Kamien, Roger and Anita, 2008). During this age, three forms of theater developed namely the Jesuit drama, Italian Opera, and the Commedia Dell Arte. As such, Vienna became one the attractive theatrical cultures of Europe.
Vienna flourished economically and developed to a cosmopolitan City. The citys architecture changed and was portrayed by bulky buildings, and the building style changed. The age of Austria baroque architecture came in. The neoclassical architecture styles became common among the Viennese architects. They approximated classical architect of Romans and Greeks. Further sculpture and painting remarked a development during the classical period in Vienna. Intellectual rise as fostered by economic prosperity in Vienna City (Kamien, Roger and Anita, 2008). Greek immigrants contributed to the enlightenment in Vienna as they created a Greek colony.
Characteristics of the Classical Period
During the classical period, substantial editorial activities were noticed at the Greek printing. Medical books, mathematics, science, and philosophy books were printed. Classical period was a time when Vienna developed civilization and was characterized from many guys as a capital of classical music and a cultural Centre because the classical period was activated by the most famous composers of all time. The war conductors in the classical period negatively affected the economy which was then raised by Maria. Maria stimulated the industry as she strengthened the economy. She established schools and lowered taxes. The colony created by Greek immigrants brought the rise of Viennas economy. The Greeks made Vienna a commercial crossroad during the classical period. All aspects of civilization as the architecture, painting, the sculpture, and music were realized during the classical period (Kamien, Roger and Anita, 2008).
