There are young, innocent and educated immigrants in the United States who feel that the war against illegal immigrants is generalized and that they are being targeted yet they have nothing to do with illegal activities perpetrated by illegal immigrants. Dreamer immigrants are immigrants who came to the United States as children, have lived for a minimum of five years in the country and are currently students or graduates, served in the military and have not been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor that is serious in nature. American immigration laws give dreamers a reprieve from being deported.

Immigrants who are not necessarily dreamers are susceptible to being deported by the American government. There are concerns by grassroots groups that there are many immigrants who do not fit in the dreamer category and as a result may be deported. The grassroots groups want the United States to revisit their immigration laws and be more accommodative to individuals who do not fit in the dreamer category so as to avert disintegration of families and other repercussions that may occur when the individuals are deported.

Deportation of migrants with criminal records has separated families in cases where a spouse to the deported migrant is a United States citizen and lives in America. Children who are United States citizens have also been separated from their fathers courtesy of deportation of migrants who have criminal records.

There are grassroots groups that are advocating for immigrants who have criminal records but have already served their time and have not engaged in recidivism not to be deported by the United States government. In defense of the immigrants with criminal records, the grassroots groups state that the immigrants have families whose basic needs and that their continual deportation will weaken the family fabric.

Critics of current immigration policies argue that it aggravates already negative perceptions that people have about illegal immigrants. Locking up illegal immigrants in isolated areas creates an impression that illegal migrants are so dangerous that the only way the country can get rid of them is locking them up in isolated detention centers.

I am of the opinion that the United States should continue with its efforts to deport immigrants with criminal records. Deporting of immigrants with criminal records will play a major role in reducing criminal activities committed by immigrants. As a result, immigrants will be more law- abiding and peace and order will prevail in the United States.
