Every person has some weaknesses and this what John Steinbeck tried to show in his book, Of Mice and Men. A lot of characters have shown different characters whose personality has some weaknesses as they have involved in in a number of unlawful deed including murder.
Lennie is seen a simple individual and animal like and save him from the misery that he will go through, he is treated as an animal as he is shot in the head. The character is seen in the barn petting a dead puppy which he had on apparently petted for a long period and a little bit hard, it is difficult for him to make up his mind about the puppy. Curleys wife shows up and Lennie excitedly kills her, and when he is confronted with George, Lennie is scared and hung on to hair and acts in fear without saying anything since he did not know what to do and this make the audience nervous on how cannot handle a difficult situation (John 87). In addition, when Curley engages into a fight with Lennie, Lennie covered his face with huge paws and bleated with terror (John 63). The author depicts brutality and murder that amongst characters in the novel.
The shooting of Candys dog portrays individuals that lacks human heart as Carlson shoots the dog since he does not like smell of the dog. Also, when Candy tries to seek help from Slim, Slim jokingly says that "I wisht somebody'd shoot me if I get old an' a cripple"(John 70) something that shows that this are weak individuals in the society. this shows how wicked some individuals are in the society.
In the novel, Candy is all alone as he worked in the ranch all his life and a few friends he made in the ranch were all men and the friendship did not last for a long period. Candy was caught up with age and could not work anymore and used to sit alone in the bunkhouses since the only thing he had loved was his killed dog. Lennie is not that lone as he has George and have no idea of what loneliness means. On the other hand, Curleys wife is surrounded by men but has no friends in the ranch. She spends most of the time alone and sad since Curley is not always around. Lastly, crook was just like candy as he spends a lot of time moving from place to place. Hence in the novel, everyone had his or her own degree of loneliness and how characters like Curley show some weaknesses of not having time with their families (Stephen and Steinbeck). In the book Of mice and men various characters with noble attributes but whose personality has defects that later resulted to their down fall. For instance, Lennie fits into this definition of tragedy. In the book, Lennie appears to be a good and loyal friend to George but he has no control of his temper and ends up killing Curleys wife. Lennies anger from not wanting to involve into trouble and is made deadly but his formidable strength. George decide to kill Lennie and the justification for shooting is to keep Lennie from encountering the pain that will follow the penalties for what he did. If Lennie is caught, he might be beaten to dead and he was aware that even if he escapes with Lennie, it will not take long before Lennie kills someone else and it will be hard to protect him from the society. this still depict the weaknesses that exist among individuals in the society (Stephen and Steinbeck).
