Reading and writing are essential parts of ones life. No one can fully accept to have reached where they are in life without practicing skills of reading and writing. Right from scribbling on the walls, while still young to the days of preschool and the rest of life writing and reading are present through every milestone. The following is an account of an individual with a withstanding difficulty in verbal skills, and how I have put my qualities to use in modifying for my weaknesses in verbal capacities.

During my early childhood, precisely three years old I had difficulty with reading the alphabets. My mother and siblings loved reading, and therefore they would demonstrate the ABCs to me. My mum reminds me that I had the ability to write the letters at an early age, but reading was a daunting task for me for a while. In any case, I eventually learned to read the letters, but my method was a bit unorthodox. Every child will learn how to read using the structure that is in place, and this structure is that one will start from A through all the letters to Z. However, my case was different; I learned to read the letters starting from N Z. I guess I developed a specific interest in these particular letters that was the push behind me learning the first. I eventually learned reading the letters A N that at the beginning proved a challenge as my mother would say. She would tell me that my progress at this stage was so slow that there were instances that she almost gave up on me ever learning these letters at the appropriate time.

At this point, my writing skills were turning out to be impeccable, and I would opt for writing than reading whenever my mother taught the letters to me. She once told me when I was older that my biggest struggle was with pronouncing the letters G and J. these letters were such a problem for me that every time I would not pronounce them the right way, I would cry. Eventually, I would integrate these sets of letters in the appropriate sequence with the help of my mother and my older siblings. It did not, however, signify the end of my struggles in reading. My mum did everything in her power to ensure that I would read and pronounce words as expected. She would buy me storybooks and read them to me. She would them expect me to read the books to her at some point. The learning process was hard both for her and for me because I was not a fast learner. She however never lost hope in me and always wanted me to do better than I was at the given time. Even as I was struggling with reading the simplest of texts my writing skills improved by the day. My mother would say that my handwriting seemed like one of an individual that was beyond my age. According to her, I was a better writer at some point than my sisters who were better than me in reading.

I loved picture books and these were all my mother would buy for me. She identified a source of books for children where I would get a supply for some years. In some instances, she would check out books from the library so that I would read them. Every night my mother would hold me in her lap as she read the stories to me and in some instances, she would want me to pronounce some words, which I did with difficulty. My mother explained that I finally gained the ability to relate words to one another and read but not effectively at the age of seven. In her desire to identify the reason behind my delay in reading, my mother sought professional help from psychologists and learning experts. At some point, she had the feeling that I had a learning disability. However, after visiting these professionals, it was clear that my case was unique. They identified that it was not a matter of learning disability but just delayed learning. They encouraged my mother that thought it would take longer that other children I would eventually gain the ability to read structured texts.

The funny thing is that in informal instances I would talk effectively with my parents, siblings and my friends at school. The issue, however, came when I had to read material in structured and formal settings especially if I was given a book or text to read. My mother explained that she heard my first words when I was two years old. She identified my first full sentence when I was three or four years old. She explained that I would still use baby talk even when I was five years old. When I finally joined the first grade, I still had a problem with pronouncing the blend th and would otherwise pronounce it as f. There were children in my class who would laugh at my speech, but my mother always comforted and encourage me.

I finally learned efficient and fluent pronunciation and reading when I was in third grade. At this point, I developed confidence in my abilities. Now I would combine my writing skills which my mother had helped me develop even more with the now acquired reading skills to improve my capacity even further. Previously I found it hard to read in class because I was conscious of the reading problem I had. Even in instances where the teacher called on me to read I would shy away or even cry. It was at a certain point in my early childhood when I finally developed the ability to read that I developed the love for reading storybooks and creative writing. There were instances where I would be the one reading storybooks to my mother and my siblings. In some cases, I would get newspapers from the house and read as my mum listen.

I would also borrow books from my classmates to read at home, and I developed a love for books at that point. The class became easier for me because the teasing that was there before stopped and I gained the ability to read in class and even volunteered for the task in some instances. Creative writing was also, what described me. The best feeling I can remember was when I developed my first tale. It was about a girl who loved play so much that she would even forget to eat. I admit that it was not at the professional level of a story-writing expert, but it was a significant accomplishment at that time. I have made huge strides in my reading and writing skills throughout the various levels of education, and I believe that they are the reason why I made it to my current educational attainment.

Junior and high school were the best years of experience for my reading and writing skills. I would write stories that my classmates appreciated, and many would encourage me to write more. They read these stories and provided feedback on how they enjoyed them. Reading was also interesting for me. I loved reading aloud to the class just to hear myself and appreciate the far I had come. I still read stories to my mother at this point because when was the source of my inspiration for the far I had come. My siblings also recognize the progress I have made to this point, and they continue to encourage me.

It is not always guaranteed that a child will read or write when the parent expects them to. There are those who will do earlier while others take a bit longer. There are those who will do it at the expected time. It, therefore, means that parents need to exercise patience with their children just as my mother did. They need to support their children because there are those who will be born with learning disabilities that will require the parent to have patience and take the child at the appropriate pace. I believe that my learning and reading skills will make a significant difference in my future.
