Introduction
Based on the drive reduction theory individuals are driven by their own biological needs. The drive is something that the body wants which motivates one to reduce the drive. Therefore, hunger is a drive that makes the body want food and sometimes the motivation for hunger goes beyond simple nourishment (Stoyanov 18). The origin of hunger feelings is the hypothalamus region of the brain where the lateral hypothalamuses are stimulated and cause hunger while the ventromedial hypothalamus causes an opposite feeling which is contentment.
Therefore the two regions are responsible for the responses to eat or stop eating. The hormones that are responsible for hunger include the Leptin which reduces appetite and the hormone Gherin which increases appetite. Obese persons often develop resistance to Leptin causing the need to keep eating. Over the recent past, the rate of obesity has increased greatly globally which is a trend that can be affiliated with modern civilization. The modern diet is full of fat, and other unhealthy ingredients with lower levels of nutrition hence increase the risk of individuals becoming obese (Stoyanov 25).
Additionally, reduced physical activity due to the development of technology contributes to weight gain. Other forms of medication are also affiliated with the increase in obesity such as certain forms of anti-depressants (Stoyanov 66). To maintain a healthy BMI through eating a healthy diet that is made up mainly of fruits and vegetables and whole grain meals. I will also ensure I engage in physical exercise often to avoid unhealthy weight gain.
Reflection on Behaviors: Maslow Hierarchy
The needs that are lower in the hierarchy receive a higher satisfaction rating. The situation is because it is easier to satisfy needs lower in the hierarchy as compared to needs higher in the hierarchy (Stoyanov 56).
Thinking of behaviors belonging in the different levels was easier since one is more inclined to ensure that some needs are satisfied than others. The outcome suggests that there are some of the behavior's that are hard to think and satisfy regarding resources and frequency (Stoyanov 75). Some of the needs identified are hard to meet since they require more resources and time which are scares considering my current state. However, this has contributed to me changing the organization of my priorities to meet the needs identified.
Ultimate for the Sake of Which
We do everything we do for the sake of happiness, and it is therefore important that happiness and self-satisfaction should be the driving force for our actions (Stoyanov 15). My ultimate for the sake of is my dream of becoming a billionaire and helping the poor around the world. The scenario is motivated by my desire to help the needy, but this endeavor requires a lot of capital investment and thus my quest to be a billionaire. The less fortunate people around the world have nobody to look up to for support, and if I can be that person, then, I would have achieved my dreams.
The choice of my ultimate for the sake of which qualifies as both self-actualization and self-transcendence since I have a lot of love for humanity and more so, the less fortunate in the society. It hurts to see people go without food because they have no access to it or are just not in a position to fend for them (Stoyanov 80). Helping the needy in the streets and volunteering in shelters gives me a sense of satisfaction and motivates me to work harder. The thought that someone out there needs my help has influenced how my behavior towards saving and has motivated me to work even harder. Extending help and bonding with a person in need boosts my morale and self-esteem based on the fact that I made their life better and made them feel loved and cared.
