Introduction
The passage is on Red Smile by Edith Iglauner. The preferable topic of the passage would be "my experience with a psychiatrist" because the author highlights various incidences, she had with the medical practitioner she was referred to by the doctor. The entire piece captures various incidences with the most hilarious being brought about through the author's description of how the psychiatrist was not interested in an experiment that the patient thought would be the most fascinating. The move to visiting the psychiatrist by the author was facilitated by the painful divorce she had undergone, except for a ludicrous mistake that had after that saved her of the situation.
The author's purpose was to highlight the different encounters that most people have with their appointments with psychiatrists for the very first time. The passage outline various tension behaviors especially in the morning of the appointment and the desire to show up in time to impress the physician. Ideally, the situations tend to generate a lot of confusion. Such experience led the author into picking up a small bottle containing contents that were red and later n sprayed the red antiseptic Merthiolate and made her teeth become bright red. However, because of the time factor, the situation could not be rectified, unfortunately.
The main idea in the passage is implicit. There is a need to differentiate real from the fake and focus on working with professionals who hold our interests at heart. The theme here highlights two different experiences with two different therapists. A deeper conceptualizing of the message shows that the first therapist was not interested in offering assistance to the author and was only after the money factor or the amount of compensation he was to receive after that. The author tried explaining the various challenges he encountered in trying to make the Inuit trust that the freshly consumed foods could be consumed using cans especially during the moments of extreme food scarcity. These included canned whale meat, blubber and seal flippers. The psychiatrist did not, however, show interest in the patient's areas of concern and ended up changing the subject. That was a mean move. His desire for money and not the author's interest is reflected through his thinly disguised attempt of trying to find out whether the client was in a position to pay for future lessons or not so that he could gauge whether or not to provide services to him.
Contrarily to this, the author's second option was the best to settle for because he took a lengthy period of evaluating for the best options and professionals who were willing to help her case. The Danish therapist is considered more approachable and open-minded because he/she came in handy is helping the author to plan for her first dinner party. The event was meant to provide her with a chance to explain her whole life more vividly and on her own. The factor of greed during service provision could be a hindering factor from exploring full potentiality in what we can do best. This time around, the author associated with the psychiatrist much better because she was aware of who exactly wanted to seek help from, and did not experience the nervous fit, constant fiddling in deciding how she would present herself before the psychiatrist.
The tone in the passage is considerably hilarious following the manner in which the author is describing her experiences, for example, the morning just before her first encounter with the psychiatrist. Looking at the last statement of page 2, the writer's description of the voice in her head saying "Hey! You better hurry up, or you'll be late" (page 2), is considerably funny. Another incident regards the descriptions on preparations he outlines that the suit he put on after taking a bath had been imported from Switzerland with green trim and brass buttons, went back to the bathroom and back to the toilet again then straight to the sink. The flow of these ideas is comical because the confusion resulting from the urge and anxiety to see a psychiatrist or doctor for the fast time is quite funny.
After shakily squeezing more toothpaste to scrub her teeth further without success is still hilarious because the color was not washing away and only meant that she would go for the appointment looking crazy. It is sidesplitting too that the client thought that after the appointment that was too late to cancel, she would go into hiding until the red color wears off. In the second last paragraph, the writer stopped at once within the glass of a store window, and the only thing she could do was to say "Doctor, whoever you are, have a sense of humor" (pg. 3). The tone has a number of impacts on me as a reader because it makes the whole passage very interesting and involving. It is easy to capture the writer's position and point of view in the entire piece and make readers feel engaged in a way they do not want the passage to come to an end. The tone equally makes the point under study be easy to conceptualize and analyze the related themes to it.
Basing on a personal reflective context, the comic tone used in the entire passage brings a lesson on the importance of being easy about situations that life might subject us onto, and the people we meet in our course of life. The hilarious nature of the persona in the passage led her into meeting a better medical professional who was in a position to propose to her better strategies of approaching her issue. The main idea here regards the importance of being open-mindedness in all life endeavors. As an author, the approach makes one's excerpt to appear relatively engaging and will make populace find your point of view to be meaningful. The author has employed this strategy as a way of gaining people's attention to digging deeper into the major themes highlighted.
A coordinate sentence is a phrase that complements the use of a particular item or style in writing. A conjunction joins two thematic sentences to generate a more meaningful ideology. An example of a coordinate sentence in the content under study comes towards the second last sentence on the final paragraph of page 2; I fiddled around, trying to decide what to wear: and then, what would I say when I got there (pg. 2). The conjunction is "and then" with the two verbs of "deciding what to wear and what to say," the subject here regards the process of fiddling around due to anxiety issues. The coordinate sentence has joined the writer's double opinionated mind into one using realistic conjunction.
A subordinate sentence is a phrase containing a subject and a verb but requires to be attached to the main clause because it becomes meaningless when left to stand alone. From the passage, an example of this regards; a glance sideways in the mirror, a flash of red (pg. 3 paragraph 3). The subject here a flash of red with a verb describing the process of glancing. However, the statement is hanging because it does not connect the readers to the main point that is being passed across.
Transitions have been employed in creating a connection between a given ideology and the other. A good example can be extracted from the first paragraph of page three; "I can remember, I have never gone to a doctor or dentist or therapist appointment without performing three sacred rituals: a bath, then the toilet; and finally, brushing my teeth" (pg. 3). The words then and finally are creating a transition between two sentences of separate meanings. Then I reached for the mouthwash, a small bottle of red Lavoris, opened my mouth and then sprayed inside (pg. 3). The words and & then have been employed for transitional reasons.
Different commas have been used to pass various ideas. For instance, "for as long as I can remember, I have never gone to a doctor or dentist or therapist appointment without performing three sacred rituals: a bath, then the toilet: and finally, brushing my teeth" (pg. 3 paragraph 1). The first comma was used for joining the two sentences, and the last two were employed for listing the three highlighted sacred rituals. "Right now I should be on the street, halfway to my appointment" (pg. 3, paragraph 4). "I could only pray: please, Doctor, whoever you are, have a sense of humor" (pg. 3 paragraph 6). The comma here was used for gapping the two different ideologies but in the same sentence.
The use of colon is equally evident. "I could only pray: please, Doctor, whoever you are, have a sense of humor" (pg. 3 paragraph 6). The colon highlights the author's wishes about the physicians as it captures the main ideas that she hopes the doctor contains. The use of dash is exemplary as well throughout the passage. Here, dashes have purposely been used in place of the colon for emphasizing the conclusion of an idea within a sentence. A glance sideways in the mirror, a flash or red. Great heavens-my teeth were bright red! (pg. 3, paragraph 3). The dash has been employed to express the seriousness of the issue regarding the intensity of the red color on the author's teeth. I hoped that eventually, the red would wear off. In the meantime, after this appointment-which it was too late to cancel- I would have to go into hiding (pg. 3, paragraph 5). The dash illustrates the seriousness of the situation and how much the author lacked a second option on the same. The challenge here was how she could face the psychiatrist without being judged regarding her appearance and presentation.
