Introduction
Wings of Desire is a fantasy movie that revolves around invisible, immortal angels who have dominated Berlin and are listening to the views and thought of the human. Tired of their immortal existence, the two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, are gliding across the streets of Berlin, staring at the vast population, providing invisible rays of hope to the hopeless and distressed but no interaction with the population is taking place. Despite the fact that, the city is densely populated, many of the inhabitants are isolated from their loved ones. Damiel falls in love with a pretty, lonely trapeze artist. Eventually, the angel opts to become mortal so that he can experience human pleasures that range from touching loved ones to enjoying various types of food and to discover human love with the artist. Indeed a state of immortality can make an individual miss some pleasures and make an individual seek for simple humanity. The settings of the film can be illustrated using the following locations
Location 1: The angels are looking over the city. (Siegessaule, Berlin)
Damiel is one of the angels is starring over the city admiring the humanity life and he is ready to sacrifice his immortal nature when he falls in love with circus acrobat Marion. This shows how he values mortal states as compared to his immortal state. This takes place at the time when the Berlin wall separated the city until Damiel joined the human race when it became better.
Location 2: Damiel is perched atop the broken spire (perched atop).
Damiel shades light and introduces perched as the most significant symbol of location during Berlin damage, the shattered spire at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church was at the eastern end of the main shopping highway of Ku'damm. The 5-spired neo-romantic church was established in 1895 in the era of Wilhelm I, who was the first German Kaiser. The angels are watching all this destruction in their immortal nature, but they can't converse with the population. They are seeing how people are being isolated from their loved ones. Unseen, exemption by the young children, the angels in the lives of the Berliners, privy to their innermost thoughts. They are in love with the city and the people, hence making them have a desire to be in a human mortal state.
Location 3: Angels flying over the city (ICC, Berlin).
Both angels eye view the drift over the international congress Centrum in the westend region of Charlottenburg-wilmersdorf, which was one of the globes greatest meeting centers. The conference was opened in 1979 and closed in 2014 as a result of asbestos contamination. Damiel and Cassiel are sharing quick vignettes of human nature as they sit in the front seats in the modernized BMW showroom. It is at this venue that Damiel first admitted that, he was admiring and was yearning for simple human nature and life.
Location 4: The angels haunt the library
The spacious and well equipped modern library, full of mysterious chatting in which the invisible angels wander among unwitting learners. The library is a newer branch of the former Staatsbibilotek which was opened in 1978 in Kulturforum. The angles are in love with how the human library is structured and are admiring the readers who are in the library. Damiel wants this kind of life and has made it clear since he is missing the human love and pleasures.'
Location 5: Damiel comforts the dying man (Langenscheidbrucke, Schoneberg, Berlin)
After a man has encountered a road accident, Damiel is trying to comfort the dying man on the southern end of Langenscheidbrucke, the bridge across the S-Bahn line which is located south of the city. Damiel is already manifesting the sense of mortality, he is now in a mortal form, and he is showing his love for mankind by extending a helping hand on the victim of a road accident. He loves humanity and wants to interact and associated with them besides falling in love with humanity. This makes him eventually fall in love with the pretty artist
Location 6: The angel looks out over the city (Siegessaule, Tiergarten, Berlin).
Damiel is seen accompanying the elderly Homer (Curt Bois) as he hangs around the vacant muddy wasteland along the wall which the Homer recalls from his 30s as a busy centre of the city. His love for humanity makes him inquire more information from Homer. It seems the Homer has been previously hanged out with Damiel since on this day he tells him that, there was nothing to recognize on that day. Damiel wants to know more about humanity, their way of life to ease his interaction with them.
Location 7: the fraught woman selling herself on the streets (Schoneberger, Berlin)
Damiel comes across a young woman selling her body beneath the elevated railway at Schoneberger, the filthy industrial area just west of the Landwehr Canal. Despite the reformation that has taken place around the city, this place has hardly changed since people use it for unethical activities. Damiel despite loving the mortality nature, this is one of the few aspects he doesn't want to encounter.
Location 8: The angels visit "the station where the station stopped" (Anhalter Bahnhof, Berlin).
Damiel is visiting the remnant of the old pre-war railway station and remembers being told that the place was not actually where the train stopped, but a place where the station stopped. This was a place where many Jews departed as a result of deportation to the concentration camps. Damiel is now interacting and knowing more about humanity since he has a quest of knowing every information.
Location 9: Newly human, Damiel trades in his breastplate at a second-hand store (Goebenstrabe, Berlin).
On becoming human, he trades in armoured for an excellent check jacket in a second-hand shop and later interacts with Marion in a late night club. Damiel is now enjoying the pleasures he was missing due to his immortal nature. He interacts with humans and enjoys the performance of Nick Cave in the most luxurious hotels in the capital that was established in 1907 and 1908. Damiel enjoys the worldly pleasures and love in the hotel after an encounter with Marion in the grand Belle Epoque style.
Location 10: At the fragments of the old hotel, Sony centre
Damiel is now fully in human nature, and he has been intrigued to the happiness and pleasures, together with the few suffering that he saw. He is now fully in love with the pretty artist, and he has everything he has ever wished for. He has left the immortal state and left the other angels haunting the Berlin city. He has eventually transformed the city, and no the city is in colors since his transformation. Above all, he has transformed into human nature, and he is satisfied, and he is feeling the importance and pleasure of human interaction and love.
