Introduction
Since I was young, I always had a desire to help people. I come from a wealthy family, but I attended a public school where I met many different people. Some children could barely afford a meal and sometimes would miss school since their parents could not afford their school fees. I felt sorry for them, although there is nothing I could do at that time. I promised myself that after completing my studies, I would do everything in my power to help the less fortunate in society. I told my parents about my decision, and they supported me. During the weekends, my siblings and I could bake cakes and buy some more. We would distribute them in our town, our primary target being the homeless people. The smiles on their faces made me happy. At a certain point, a non-governmental organization (NGO) spotted us and decided to support my vision of taking care of those who could not afford their basic amenities. With the help of the organization, I was able to secure some blankets and clothes which were distributed among the homeless. Every time I engaged in this activity during the weekends and holidays, I felt fulfilled and contented. I felt like doing much more. However, my parents insisted that I should concentrate on my studies first and then continue with charity afterward.
Before joining high school, I was contacted by the same NGO, and they informed me of an agenda they had been pushing for a long time. I was very excited when they informed me that they were planning to go to different continents to assist the less fortunate, especially children, to attend school and have food on their table. That is where my journey began. My dream of helping others have a better life would finally come true. My parents were nostalgic since I could not proceed with school with my agemates at that time. However, they understood that charity work made me very happy and fulfilled. They had no option but to let me go. After all the preparations were made, we set off. The first continent would be Africa, I had heard so much about Africa, but what I saw was amazing.
Our first stop was South Africa, which has the biggest slum in that continent. People lived in small shacks and could barely afford healthy food and a good education. As an organization, we introduced ourselves and convinced the people that we were there to help. Children went back to school with their fees fully paid, and others got scholarships to study abroad. Those who were homeless were relocated to better semi-permanent houses in secure areas built by the NGO. I was so happy after seeing the joy on the children's and their parent's faces. They had started a new chapter of their lives, and there was hope for the future.
Africa is a beautiful country. Wherever we visited, we were warmly welcomed and toured around. There were beautiful sceneries of mountains, forests, and lakes with wildlife roaming around. One could not tell that behind their smiles was mystery and suffering. I was so overwhelmed after listening to some of the stories some children told about their lives. However, before moving on to another country, I made sure that many kids went back to school and that they had all the basic amenities they required. I left my contacts to constantly communicate with the families so that I could know the progress and know where to assist.
After staying in Africa for two years, I decided to go back home since I felt I had done enough. It was now time to change the lives of people in my community. Upon reaching home, I contacted another organization to assist me in moving the homeless people into shelters. I facilitated the transfer of the older adults into homes for the elderly and made sure that they had settled and were comfortable. Street children were moved into children homes where they would continue with their education, and those who did well would get scholarships to join college.
Conclusion
Many people wished to join me in my charity work after seeing what I was doing. At one time, I got featured in one of the local magazines where I gave my story from where my journey began. That was the moment I discovered how much I had impacted other people's life after sacrificing so much time and energy. To date, I still involve myself in charity and make follow-ups to make sure that the people I help are living a good life. Being involved in charity work was the best decision in my life and am grateful to my parents for supporting me throughout the journey. I am very proud of myself and thankful to God for allowing me to meet and interact with awesome people. That is why I always advise people to help where they can for there is joy in giving.
