Human Needs Theory Interactive Case Study

The interactive case study is on Mr. Duran who is a Mexican-American at the diabetic clinic, with questions on how to start administering his insulin. From the interactive case study, the human needs theories have a key role in guiding the nurse's practice. In this case study, two nursing theories will be compared to their concepts, assumptions, implications and application regarding the case study. The two theories to be discussed in this case study are the Parse's theory of nursing and Watson's theory of human caring.

Concepts

Watson's theory of human caring asserts that the nursing practice is a humanitarian science whereby the profession applies personal, scientific, and ethical practices to ensure there are balance and harmony between health and illness experience of a person (Ozkan, et al., 2013). Through the concept of love from this theory, it signifies that love is the core healing source in practice (Ozkan, et al., 2013). On the other hand, the Parse's theory of nursing focuses on patient's consent on every medication by viewing every individual in the case study as an active participant regarding the heath outcome of the patient. Parse's theory has given the patient mandate to make choice of medication and be an active participant in the medication interaction (Doucet & Bournes, 2007). From the Watson's theory, there is the promotion of love and care while in Parse's theory, informed consent is highly valued.

Assumptions

From the Watson's theory, the only assumption made is that human beings are not objects and they need comfortable, beautiful and peaceful environment. This assumption promotes the need to love and care for the patient's needs. From the Parse's theory, the only assumption is that the patient knows what is best for them (Doucet & Bournes, 2007). Through this assumption, the patient has the ground to seek medical advice on administration or usage of any medication.

Implications

According to the Watson's theory of nursing, nursing practice is a process of human-to-human caring where love and care are, the key healing sources (Ozkan, et al., 2013). Watson's theory allows interaction of both the patient and the caregiver in a peaceful and caring environment. In the Parse's theory, the implication still is a nurse-patient relationship where the nurse helps on helping the patient.

Application

The application of Watson's theory in the interactive case study is keeping a peaceful environment where love and care are maintained. Another application of Watson's theory is showing love and care to the patient. On the other hand, Parse's theory is applicable in giving the patient a humble background to express the difficulties and also make suggestions. Both theories are focused on providing patient-centered care.
