Introduction
The goal of this lab is to understand different types of forces and torques that occur during muscle contraction about joints using the information from the muscle mechanics lab.
What is the equation for torque? What units are torque in, and what is torque defined as?
The equation is F * r; the unit is N*m. The tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis
Calculate the torque in the following scenarios.
T= 10*10=100 N.m
T=10*10*cos40=76.6 Nm
T=4*20*sin70=75.2 Nm
Problem
Assuming the combination of both forearms and hands amounts to 6.00% of a human's body weight, that the biceps is attached 5.5 cm below the elbow joint, and the center of mass of the forearm lies 16.0 cm from the elbow joint of a 38.0 cm forearm. As a group, generate a general equation for the force excreted on the forearm by the biceps if your mass is "M" kg and you wish to raise an "m" kg weight using your biceps muscle while your forearm is at any given angle theta below the horizontal. Then use your equation to create an excel sheet to solve the force in the biceps brachii for the following scenarios.
Equation
Fb= [(3.73*cos (angle below horizontal) *dumbbell mass*) +(.047*body mass*cos (angle below horizontal)]/ (.055* cos (angle below horizontal)
Post-Lab
What about a force affects torque? Is there a positive aspect that is easiest to change in certain situations? Think about opening a fire hydrant, using a ratchet, or rowing a boat.
The force that causes a torque is affected by the angle of action by force to the load and the arm length. Maximum torque is available when the force acts in the perpendicular and has the maximum arm of application of force is possible.
What are some examples of general equation applications? When would it be easier to create a general equation instead of calculating steps as you go?
The equations can be applied in determining the force required to tighten bolts and nuts. It is easier to create a general calculation when only one parameter is changing in calculations.It would be easier to create a general equation instead of calculating steps when the data that need to computed using the general formula is large. In such a scenario, more time will be consumed to ensure all the calculations are done correctly. On the other, The uniformity of the results is guaranteed when the general formula has beenestablished.
Conclusion
What went well/unwell (1 of each) /2pts. What would you change next time?
The calculations for the torque for different measurements were possible. The thing that went unwell was on the concept that it was not possible to create a general equation.
What Real world application of topics?
Real applications include determination of the force that forces of the human arm can support. Other applications include the design and manufacture of equipment that helps patients with limbs problems.
How could the real-world application be improved/innovated and how would this produce an economic benefit?
The real world applications can improve the pace at which treatment can be administered as well as the design of the products.
Review of topics learned in a lab activity
Forces from muscles cause contraction. Forces created by the muscles forms at the joints. To calculate forces generated by the biceps muscles, there is a need to develop a general equation to calculate the force on the muscles of the biceps. Ms. Excel tool has been used in making the calculations more efficiently.
