Literary Analysis Essay on Love's Executioner

Introduction

The book of Love's Executioner has several quotes some of which are very peculiar and loud for that matter and addressing Thelma as in this paper. Otherwise, in my reading of the book, there are some of the quotes that I found to be very silent and not easily identifiable. Theses silent ideas have meanings that contributes a lot to the clarity of the message in the book. These quotes include;

"I do not like to work with patients who are in love. Perhaps it is because of envy-I, too, crave enchantment. Perhaps it is because love and psychotherapy are fundamentally incompatible. The good therapist fights darkness and seeks illumination, while romantic love is sustained by mystery and crumbles upon inspection. I hate to be love's executioner." The reason for this quote by Irvin D. Yalom is to explain how challenging it is to work with and to handle the patients who are in the influence of love. The therapeutically process offered to this kind of patients is always not as usual as if they were not under the control of love which is the course of some of the stresses they have to go through, again and again, leading to their depressions.

"Love is not just a passion spark between two people; there is the infinite difference between falling in love and standing in love. Rather, love is a way of being, a "giving to," not a 'falling for"; a mode of relating at large, not an act limited to a single person." By this Irvin D. Yalom meant to explain that love can get deep into an individual's psychology to the extent that it causes them to be enslaved by the action of the others in love with them hence resulting to the changed behavior of the individuals. Just as it said that love is poison, the individuals are poisoned in the brain and their feelings. The reason for this quote is to have a deep understanding of the cause of the complications in the patients.

"People who feel empty never heal by merging with another incomplete person. On the contrary, two broken-winged birds coupled into one make for clumsy flight. No amount of patience will help it fly; and, ultimately, each must be pried from the other, and wounds separately splinted. The" again in this quote Irvin D. Yalom, according to me meant that the individuals who are not mature could not be made to mature up just by the fact that they come together in love. In such a case, if anything happens between them, they will both be wounded easily and would not find it easy to heal their hearts.

Yalom’s Patients Identified

The patient, in this case, is Thelma who is a polyester-clad septuagenarian and involved in a destructive love obsession with her former therapist. The two had a brief affair of eight past years. She is unable to function well since she still thinks of the recent love affair which has led her into an obsession I twenty-seven days. Doctor Ylom reveals the effort that he put to solve this obsession by showing the prematurity and the rawness that was in this love season.

Overall “Take-Away” From the Book

The whole lesson learned from the book, in summary, is that love is not just physical but also spiritual and emotional, individuals, therefore, don't solve their problems by fling in love. Love, therefore, needs to be mean to those who are mature.
