Literature Essay on The Man With Beautiful Eyes by Charles Bukowski

The man with Beautiful Eyes is a film poem written by the poet Charles Bukowski. In his poem, Bukowski explores the idea of their childhood that is him and his other friends. He explains how they used to play in a bamboo plantation around their home. He also elaborates how they used to feed Goldfish in a fish pond around their surroundings. He clearly gives out a picture of how they used to enjoy life in their compound during their childhood. Then there was an isolated house, where they thought nobody lived there. Their parents had warned them and denied them the permission to access that house. As it is always the circumstance of children to take risks of whatever they are warned about, they went there, and they were very eager to discover whatever was strange in that house. Their aim was to understand denial by parents in accessing the house. Days passed by as they played around the compound where they had been denied without no discovery of what was hidden there. Then one day, they saw a man, a strange man whom they thought was not an ordinary human being. The strange thing about the man was that he had very bright eyes. From his look, the eyes glazed beautifully. This occurrence surprised the kids.

Furthermore, the children thought that their parents had denied them access to the house since they never wanted them to know anything about the supernatural man who lived there. The children went back to the house for several times, but they never saw the man again. The back visit took several weeks, but the man was nowhere to be seen anymore. One day, the kids saw the house. It had been completely burned down. The fishpond had been destroyed, and the beautiful goldfish was all dead. The bamboo which provided a nice and beautiful playing ground had also been completely burned. The children then thought together. Their parents who had denied them access to that house had done all that. They came to a conclusion that their parents had destroyed everything because it was all beautiful and they were unable to afford that beauty of their own. They suggested that their parents were jealous of the fishpond and the beautiful fish, the bamboo and the amazing blazing eyes of the Superman.

Therefore, Bukowski in his poem explores the idea of jealousy. He clearly shows how people cannot feel good about the goodness surrounding them that they cannot afford. From his video, he does not provide the whole text of the poem direct from the screen. He provides a clip of the words followed by a dramatic representation of whatever was happening. His film clip clearly shows his message right from the beginning to the end, which is very different from the film poem by Russell Edson. Bukowski explores both the literature view and then brings out the picture of whatever was happening. He clearly shows the strange house, the fishpond with the goldfish, the beautiful bamboo where the kids play and the Superman with his blazing eyes. The director, on the other hand, brings out the information he conveys very clearly.

The Ape

The Ape is a film adapted poem by Rusell Edson. He tries to explore an argument between a mother and father. The father is seen to have a greater affection for apes than the mother. The information is conveyed in a way that the couple eats apes. The Father is always complaining about the ape meat every night. The Mother, on the other hand, seems to be interested in the ape meat and urges the Father that he has not had enough. The conversation goes on with the mother paying more attention to the ape meat than the father.

Edson shows his film in a different way from the Bukowskis. The whole film shows text throughout, which is very different from Bukowskis as he provides just shortcut text and the most important text to support his representations. There are no dramatic representations in the ape poem, which brings out the clear difference between the two poem film adaptations. Both poets use film adaptations which seem to be similar but have a clear difference when it comes to the dramatic or the video representations. Bukowski, for instance, uses pictures and images to bring out his information clearly. The text is only displayed on important occasions and direct speeches, for example when the Superman talks to the kids, and the parents as they address their kids never to go in the strange house. Therefore, the combination of Bukowskis poem that is the limited text, images and the direction by Jonathan Hodgson brings out his message clearly than Edsons poem. It is clear that if Edson had applied some images and dramatic representations, his poem would be more understandable.

In general, both poems are film adapted poems. The message is brought out differently by the method of representation by each poet. Bukowskis poem has more representation than Edsons poem. The representation in both poems is different and hence has determined the effectiveness of how the information has been brought out.
