Introduction

B.A.T.A.M is a film which was made by Johan Lindquist. The film is ethnographic presenting the stories of some two women who were living on the island of Batam known as Indonesia. The primary focus of the film indicates how multinational capitalism and movement relate ion the globalization shadowlands. An ethnographic is a process of data collection to explore and critically analyze the social practices of a particular group of individuals, and the come up with a more compacted description of how the proposed group of individuals operate, relying on their participation and observation of that group. Thus in analyzing the film, I will mainly focus on the women's labor, globalization ideologies of gender in terms of both ethical and quality aspects as an ethnographical film.

In the film, the interview is used as an instrument of data collection. Wati who is the principal character in an interview is a worker in the factory, and she is a young female. There is also another participant known as Dewi who works in the electronic factory and comes from Java, is now a prostitute. Therefore it is clear that the economy which is officially located in the factories an economy of prostitution which is not official have come up conjointly because of the free zone of trade. Therefore the two divergent economies rely on the female labor which reflects the way global capitalism and the movement socializes in the globalization shadowlands and as a result of unofficial economic development of prostitution as depicted in the film, Batam`s population increased from 3000 to approximately 700,000.

The film is instrumental in anthropology because it is dealing with the cross-cultural study of ethnography and gender. For example, in considering the effects of globalization especially on women, B.A.T.A.M film gives a more conceptualized view on the daily opportunities and predicaments that individuals face as they explore visions of current life that are glittering but is also dangerous. The film also tries to state how the women workers in the factories despite their job; they are oppressed and feel more shameful because of the sex attached posts.
