Statistics by the National Vital Statistics Reports in 2014 places suicide among the ten most common killers in the 21st century, including heart diseases, cancer accidents and lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This is a worrying statistic given the multitude of deaths that result from these top killers of the modern century. With almost 43,000 reported cases annually, male deaths were recorded to be 3.6 more times likely to commit suicide. These statistics imply that the male deaths resulting from suicide have been on the rise gradually and continue to increase as the years go by. The figure is even much higher than the infant mortality in the United States, which was once one of the single most significant causes of deaths.

Chief among the causes of suicide among men are mental diseases resulting from different causes. Drug and alcohol addiction, for instance, has been touted as being one of the single most cause associated with suicide among the population. Addiction to drugs such as pain relievers for example as well as hard drugs and substances including heroin and cocaine have mainly been related to unintentional death due to the ease in which one could end up with a fatal overdose. Subsequently, the mental stress and anguish that results from such addiction could result in intentional suicide when it becomes unbearable to handle. The social stigma surrounding such addiction also significantly contribute to the increase of related suicides in the past few decades. It is worth noting that the highest number of victims of drug and substance addiction and abuse compose of the male population. This, therefore, contributes to the high male to female ratio of suicide-related deaths as pointed out in the 2014 statistics. Females have been known to shy away from addictions to dangerous drugs and substances and thus the smaller number of suicide-related deaths among this segment of the population.

Though suicide cases in men have been on the rise the world over, the social stigma that surrounds it results in a large number of cases going unreported and therefore misinformation in the actual statistics. The phenomena have been highly associated with subliminal mental conditions that often go unreported in their initial stages and later on come top cause problems when they are out of control. The suicide cases among men can be addressed if the mental issues are sent on a timely basis to catch this problem before they go out of hand. Public education to address the stigmatisation surrounding it would also be of great benefit towards addressing these cases.
