Introduction
I come from family seafarers and since my childhood, I have often had the pleasure of joining my two generation if seafarers in their trading vessels. However, I am often intrigued by the mechanics of global shipping, trade, and finance industry. Over the years, I have shadowed my father, the Master of the ship in managing the operations of the vessel - from navigation to coordination of the crew branches to keeping track of the trade volume and balancing the accounts. As I grew older, I started to help him maintain accounts of the ships' allowances, which were in the form of crisp dollar bills straight from the printing press. I counted the money and balanced the earnings and expenditures, an activity that contributed significantly to my knowledge of the world-scale management of hundreds of currencies. This was a full-time job, which demanded interest and dedication because it involved currency conversion, value estimation, and accounting thus my desire to pursue economics and management, international management, and or business management
Over the years, I have gained invaluable, first-hand insight into price movements in both local terms and international currencies. I loved the workings of the exchange rate systems, which hike and dip much like the waves of the ocean where I was first introduced to economics, trade, and management. I have developed both my theoretical and practical understanding of economics and management by taking part in and initiating various activities. For two consecutive years, I have been a part of the 'Voorpret', a simulation of the experience of setting up and running a business for high school students, and this competition has provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate my dexterity in applying and adapting my previous knowledge to new scenarios. At various points during the competition, I have been tasked with responsibilities that required decision-making, planning, and scheduling as well as communication and process optimization. I am in the process of developing a website for a local animal shelter to help them record donations received by them and the pet adoptions that have taken place through them. I have not only enhanced my skills in balancing various departments of an organisation but have also amalgamated the essential abilities of communication and technological awareness to meet the needs of my client. The experience has stimulated me to gain competency in management. I have developed a keener interest in the global shipping industry in consideration of the current economic climate. I am a business focused individual aspiring to have a high performing care in both global shipping and trading. Despite my practical experiences in the sea trade, I find that I still need to integrate practical subjects in sea trading with an academic theory to properly understand the global sea trade and solving challenges under time constraints.
I have identified the best colleges that offer business and economically related courses that can help me acquire and sharpen my skills to operate at an executive level in the shipping business. I have also viewed the school's course outline and I find it comprehensive enough to produce an all-around professional. I was particularly looking for developing skills in areas such as shipping, supply chain and commodities, finance, investment, trading, banking, and related disciplines. I believe that rigorous courses and competent lecturers will provide me with a platform for international discourses on shipping, trade, and finance because these are the relevant skills in today's economic and financial environment. I believe that joining your schools' programs would provide me with an opportunity and fulfill my appetency for the disciplines of economics and management. I hope to further leverage my dedication and perseverance to pursue my undergraduate education in these fields in an international and dynamic environment to achieve my dreams.
