I am writing to you from the city of New York, USA. I tend to think you are all well and that the children are in good condition. I hope you have outgrown your fiscal constraints and that the tough financial times in Copenhagen have weathered off. I wish to apologize for taking too long to communicate after making up my mind to leave you. The reason for the silence is because my earlier moments in New York were a bit tight and I could not get a better opportunity, far much beyond this to write to you. I was financially unstable and thus, could not afford to get a letter written and posted to you. My arrival in New York was hit by a wave of loneliness and abject poverty. I lived in the streets of Stony Brook for one year working as a bar attendant. The amount I got was only enough to buy me food. Amidst all these challenges, I had two female friends who motivated me to work had. They were bar attendants too.

How much have the children grown? Can they read and write? Or do they weave ornaments like I did? All the same, I miss them and would want to be with them soon. As a matter of fact, my letter to you is a request that you allow the children to stay with me. I can take care of their financial upkeep because I am currently doing a different job here in New York, a better job. I work as a butcher in one of the parking houses in the city suburbs. I make enough cash to sustain myself and still save. I live in my house with an exquisite garden in which the children can play. New York has strengthened me a lot. Here women are strong and tend to find lives for themselves. There are movements known as the Suffrage Movements that are conventions advocating for the rights of women in the USA. Through the movements, women in the country can vote and apply for jobs as men do. Most of the roles that were traditionally secluded for people are now open to both genders. Women like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns are excellent conventional leaders who empower women to be strong and speak for themselves. As a result of the movements, single and married women alike have developed the courage to speak for themselves without fear and look for jobs to feed themselves and their families. I have been so much influenced by this lifestyle and gained a lot of strength that I have found myself one of the lucky ones to get employment over here. The government has also motivated women to venture into work environment by educating them and absorbing them into secretarial jobs. Just to mention a brief American history; after the wars, most of the married women were at the forefront of searching for jobs to feed their children since most of them had buried their husbands. The revolution has since been heavier, and most of us have survived the harsh job seeking conditions like criticism. The work environment here is fine and women are treated as fair as men are.

I, therefore, request you to release my children. Allow them to come stay with me because I miss them. I am their mother and lawfully entitled to be with them as much as you are. Furthermore, I have the ability to provide for them in all spheres now that I have a stable life. I pledge to work extra hard to meet their needs and would frequently communicate with you so as to regularly update you on their well-being. New York also happens to be a better town than Copenhagen. It is lively and accommodative; I am sure they will find it interesting to stay here with me. They will go to school and learn numbers or better weaving skills, far much beyond my ability in Copenhagen. Send my kind regards to the children. Tell them that I still remember them, that I love them and wish to reunite with them because I miss each one of them.

Kindly reply to this letter in any case you receive it. Let me know about the children and your take on my request. I will be pleased to hear from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Nora Helmer.
