Introduction
For a long time, the debate over transgender persons has been raging among religious scholars, scientific experts, and social philosophers whereby there was a division over their perception on the issue of transgender. After the push and pull over this matter, it is now clear that transgender people exist, and they need to lead a normal life just like other persons. Consequently, laws and regulations are slowly emerging to govern the operations of the transgender community, as far as their social, political and economic engagements are concerned. This discourse, therefore, seeks to demystify some misunderstandings of the transgender population by examining some facts that characterize or affect this community.
About Transgender Community
The transgender community is made up of people who manifest transsexual traits. These are individuals who exhibit a gender identity that does not rhyme with their culturally assigned sex. For instance, a perceived male person would act or behave in a way that is not common with the male gender. He often behaves in a feminine way, which causes people to misunderstand his stand with regards to gender. Such a feeling is referred to as gender dysphoria (Pelleschi, 2016). The transgender community has all the rights and privileges that the female and males wield.
Members of the transgender community are at liberty to morph permanently to the gender, which they feel it is comfortable to be. In most cases, medical surgery procedures help the transition (Pelleschi, 2016). During this exercise, the person undergoes hormone replacement therapy. Besides, various therapies related to sex assignment take place to enable the person's body to augur well with the new gender of their choice. The federal laws protect the transgender community against any form of discrimination. The transgender population made a resounding milestone when the U.S Circuit Court of Appeals made a ruling that prevents any form of discrimination against members of the transgender community. This decision remains an integral step in the struggle for transgender recognition.
What to Learn About Transgender Community
Since the transgender community got accepted in society, there are many things that people do not know or understand about it. These misunderstandings have caused a lot of friction between the transgender community and other groups. For instance, there is a need to learn that the transgender members are not all the same. Despite their similarity in sexuality, they differ in other aspects of life. Just like the members of the female and male genders, the transgender members also possess different traits (Taylor, Haider-Markel, & Lewis, 2018). There are some who are temperamental while others are polite. Furthermore, some members have negative behaviors while others have positive ones. In essence, people should learn these differences to comprehend the transgender community better.
It is crucial to learn that not all transgender members go through surgeries to change their sexual orientation. Just a few of the members undergo the surgical procedure owing to the complexity and risks that come with such an operation (Taylor, Haider-Markel, & Lewis, 2018). Additionally, the costs of surgery are incredibly high that only a few members of the transgender community can afford it. People should learn that most members of this community are comfortable with their sexual orientation, and they live with it without any alarm. Once an individual learns these issues, they will coexist with the transgender community peacefully.
Necessary Changes Required
There is no doubt that the transgender community has grappled with numerous challenges in their social, political and economic interactions with other communities. In light of that, people should execute some changes in their services to accept, understand and work with the transgender population. Among the steps to take is the establishment of amenities that suit this community. In public places, for instance, they should add the third lavatory for the transgender in addition to the ladies and gents cubicles. This initiative will eliminate the perceived discrimination of the transgender community (Pelleschi, 2016).
The publications and other lucubration in online and offline libraries, which often made adverse allegations against the transgender community or individuals, should be removed from the libraries. This step is critical in championing for the rights of this community (Taylor, Haider-Markel, & Lewis, 2018). In any case, most of these books have harmful content that does not appeal to the transgender community. The government should establish more programs that advocate for the welfare of the transgender community. Such programs include the establishment of medical schools and colleges to generate experts who can handle transgender issues. Laws and legislation that protect the rights of this community need streamlining so that they become accepted just like any other law of the society.
Conclusion
The transgender community has a lot of stake in the society. Many members of this community lead a normal life, and they should get protection in all spheres. The discourse about their existence should not emerge again. Instead, ways of improving the community's subsistence should be embraced since this is the only way to make this group of persons fit in society. When their welfare is catered for, they will unquestionably contribute positively to society.
