Introduction

In 1906, seven men who deserve a lot of honor form the University of Cornell came up with this amazing movement that would come to change our country forever. By establishing African-American fraternity, they achieved an unbelievable organization that has the potential to bond the men together to promote leadership for the African American, community service and academic excellence. Among the achievements that Alpha Phi Alpha have achieved include promoting politics, community services, education, and mentorship to countless individuals, not forgetting myself in this category. There is enough evidence that shows that Alpha Phi Alpha is a fraternity that displays honor and authentic brotherhood. When it comes to the question of why I would like to join Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, there is a lot I can talk about. However, as an army man, we are always urged to "kiss things" which means keep it simple. Alpha Phi Alpha is driven by a mission which is "to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence while providing service and advocacy for our communities" (Barber, Espino, & Bureau, 2015). This mission statement creates the backbone of my desire to join this fraternity.

The challenges I have witnessed growing up in the United States, motivate me to join a fraternity that is willing to eradicate such problems among a specific group of individuals. I was raised with a strong sense of community and love for all. When I was growing up, I witnessed two types of America one enjoying a lot of privileges while the other part is experiencing the impact of drugs, violence and lack of basic needs such as education and health care. I remember studying in a school that lacked the resources we required for active learning. More to that, I have witnessed some students dropping out of school due to aspects such as drug use and lack of resources and proper guidance. This is although education is the best form of empowerment that one can ever have. By joining Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, I will have a chance to ensure that I would use my leadership skills to provide mentorship where it is required.

Passing the leadership to the next generation is another vital aspect that motivates me to join Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Great leaders are not only remembered by their accolades and actions. The other leaders also recognize them; they have also mentored to become great leaders who will take their positions in society. My aim of joining Alpha Phi Alpha is hence not only to continue enhancing my development as a leader but also to facilitate the development of others.

As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, I know I have the potential of helping the development of others. My inspiration comes from the experience I have gained as the United States military. As a military man, I have been trained to become an efficient leader. Besides, I am also well trained on how to facilitate the development of other leaders. Military leadership training equips me with a knowledge that I can use to assess the weaknesses and strength of others and help them come with plan action they can use to promote their leadership skills. This is based on my belief that vast knowledge needs to be passed from a generation to the other since, without this, it will become distinct.

My contribution to the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will hence be to take it to the next level by helping it to continue fulfilling its mission. I will achieve this by providing my services in the community whenever necessary. Alpha Phi Alpha will help me achieve my desire to serve the community. As I had stated earlier, this is just a summary of my desire and the contributions I would wish to make in Alpha Phi Alpha. Since I believe in deeds more than words, this essay will act just as mental fodder, but the main course will be in the form of actions.
