A brief literature review on the subject is given with the authors referring to previous studies on the attitudes towards the intellectually disabled and how sterilization was a remedy to control their reproduction. The authors have also referred to previous studies about the liberal attitudes concerning the sexuality of individuals with an intellectual disability even though the liberty is still controlled by other people. The carers' attitudes are also seen to be major contributors to sexuality development of individuals with intellectual disability due to their conservative nature. The literature review has also referred to the main hinders of the young people's sexual exploration to be a high dependency on carers, protection from pregnancy or abuse and limited privacy. According to (Dyer & das Nair 2013), the above points are significant as far as a literature review is concerned since they lay the foundation for the study to allow quality research on the subject under discussion.

Research Design

The research aimed at gathering information about the relationship between the developments of sexual identity during graduation of young individuals who were intellectually disabled into adulthood by interviewing them together with their carers. To achieve this, a purposeful opportunity sampling was applied to people who had verbal competence and were willing to give consent and relevant information. According to McClelland et al. (2013), the sample met the recommendations of the study.

Data Collection Instrument

The study conducted an in-depth exploration of the target population through semi-structured interviews, and thus it employed a qualitative research design technique. According to Rushbrooke et al. Analysis

The researchers used Inductive and iterative data analysis processes to analyze the data collected from the respondents to reduce the volumes to manageable sizes by incorporating a detailed description and interpretation coding of transcripts. The analysis allowed for the identification of new themes in every transcript resulting in the organization of master themes by identification of patterns and connections between the career, the young individuals, and the whole group. To strengthen the validity of the analyses, quality standards for qualitative research were adopted as well as credibility checks (Fitzgerald and Withers 2013).

Findings and Conclusion

The findings from the data collected resulted in the emergent master theme which was the struggle for 'as normal as possible adult identity' and the normality of the struggle for sexual identity.
