The case where Jackson and his two friends visit the pawn shop and see a powwow-dance regalia which he thinks is for his grandmother is also another case of external conflict. It is evident that Jackson and his two friends have the urge of buying the regalia and the shop owner is also supportive of them by giving the enough time to consolidate the required cash and also giving them part of the case. However, Jackson and his two friends are trapped in a series of drinking sessions where they spend the cash that they are supposed to use in the buying of the regalia. This proves that Jackson and his friends are fighting external conflicts that prevent them from fulfilling their plans. External conflict in this case is apparently alcohol as it is through alcohol where the spend their cash thereby affecting their plans. Additionally, it can also be said that Jackson and his two friends are their own external conflicts, this is because they are negative influence of one another and this is a matter that affects their plans.

A case of external conflict is presented in the disrespectful and unappreciative daughter, Dee, is presented in the book Everyday Use by Alice Walker. Despite the efforts that her mother, Mama, and her sister, Maggie makes to welcome her home and make her feel appreciated and welcomes, Dee proves to be arrogant, it is evident that her arrogance is the external conflict affecting her relationship with her family. The acts of Dee beg the question, why would a child show her family such arrogance? The story serves to enlighten the population and especially the children and the youth on the need to appreciate the role of their parents in their lives and acknowledge efforts that parents make towards improvement of their lives. The title of the story Everyday Use is used figuratively to show how Mama and her daughter, Maggie have been reduced to use and being treated as crap by Dee and her boyfriend Hakim-a-barber.

Who would have thought that a daughter who lives in other parts of the country would come back to their home only to choose and take the best quilts when it is evident that she has all the good things that her family miss back in the rural. There is also the concern as to the intent of the visit as it is evident that all that Dee and her boyfriend came to do was not to visit Mama and Maggie. We should not allow such form of disrespect as witnessed in the case of Dee and proves the need to encourage disciplining of children while they are still young. With the current degree of child freedom, we are bound to have a crisis of indiscipline of the children and a similar case as witnessed in Dee is bound to increase in the population. Another issue that the story addresses is love between siblings as evident in the relationship between Dee and Maggie. We, as authors, need to focus more on promoting love in the society and specifically between siblings to help in the boosting love and cohesion in family setups. Selfishness is also shown when the author posits that Dee becomes totally obsessed with a butter churn in the corner of the yard that was made by her uncle. She wants to take parts of it and use them to decorate her own place. Later on, Dee goes into the house and finds two really cool handmade quilts as she's rummaging through her mother's trunk. Wow, she seems to think, this place is better than IKEA, brimming with charming and quirky items that she can use to spruce up her apartment. Such is a case of selfishness that we must discourage in the society.
