Introduction

This year primary election is out; voters are waiting for the upcoming November election. The United States Senate election is being held in Texas on November 6, 2018, along with other elections to the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives in additional states. Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke is running against incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. Cruz is running for re-election to a second term. The first primary for the 2018 season for both parties was held on March 6. As Cruz and O'Rourke both won majorities in their primaries, they did not participate in the May 22 runoff primary held for some nominations in Texas. However, the election competition between these two parties' candidates will be exciting to watch because Texas has not elected a Democratic Senate candidate since 1988. The debate between Senator Ted Cruz, affiliated with the Republican Party, defeated former State representative Paul Sadler by a sixteen-point difference margin in the 2012 election. This year, the pool is tightening between Beto O'Rourke and Ted Cruz, which is why this will be the most competitive race. Senator Ted Cruz is the most conservative Republican senator, and has worked on many committees such as the Senate Committee on Commerce Science, the Transportation Subcommittee on Space Science and Competitiveness, the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, the Joint Economic Committee, the Senate Committee on Armed Services, and the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. Ted Cruz was raised in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. Before then Ted Cruz became a Senator, he worked at clerkships for a year (1997-1998). In 1999, he joined President George Bush's presidential campaign as a domestic policy adviser.

Eventually, after the inauguration of George Bush, Cruz served as an associate deputy attorney general in the United State Justice Department and the U.S Federal Trade Commission. Later on, he worked at the Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott, appointed him into the office of Solicitor General of Texas. All of these positions and experiences helped him to take an active leadership role in the United States in articulations and a vision of strict conservatism.

Senator Ted Cruz believes that every individual has the right to keep and bear arms. He also believes in building a wall, along with deporting illegal immigrants. For Gun violence, Ted Cruz quoted that, "The right to bear arms is one of the most foundational and basic freedoms in our Constitution," Sen. Cruz said. "I am therefore proud to cosponsor this bill which will roll back regulations that specifically and unfairly targeted Texas. I am grateful for the opportunity to reverse the previous administration's misguided policies and champion Texans' and Americans' freedom to protect themselves and their families."

Beto O'Rourke is a fourth-generation Texan, born and raised in El Paso. After graduating from Columbia University, Beto worked in New York for a few years before deciding to move back to his hometown and start a small technology company which was the success. Over the years Stanton Street hired dozens of people in high skill, high-wage jobs that one might not expect to see in a border community. Outside of work, Beto became deeply involved in the civic, business and community efforts in El Paso. He ran for El Paso City Council in 2005 and served for two terms before running for U.S. Congress in 2012, taking on an eight-term incumbent and winning. He knocked on thousands of doors and had real conversations, face-to-face, with the voters in El Paso. In Congress, Beto serves on the House Committees for Armed Services and Veterans Affairs. He has made it a priority to work across the aisle to secure bipartisan support for his legislation. Beto knows our country is at its best when we can put parties aside to work together, build consensus and find common ground.

Much of Beto's focus has been on improving the ability for veterans to get the health care and other earned benefits that they need. He has been focused on curbing the influence of corporate money in Congress. He helped introduce the No PAC Act, which would stop candidates for federal office from relying on PACs to bankroll their campaigns. For Beto, immigrants are seen as a critical source of strength and security in our communities - that beyond stopping walls and raids, we take the lead in writing immigration policy that matches our values and interests. Beto is traveling to every part of Texas to meet with citizens in their communities. Whether they are Democrats, Republicans, Independents or even non-voters, all Texans deserve an accountable, full-time, full-service Senator who is committed to working tirelessly for our state. Now is the time for Texas to step up and lead. According to Beto O' Rourke, "There is no reason that weapons of war should be sold to people in this country."

Conclusion

This November, I will be voting for Beto, an immigrant, I agree with Beto on Immigration, gun control, and healthcare. Because of his stance on these critical issues, I will vote for him. "For democracy to deliver, citizens must become informed about issues that can improve their lives. They must be free to join together to express their views and preferences and work to see that the government responds to citizen views, thus holding those in government accountable. To be informed, citizens need accurate and timely information, particularly information contained by the government. They need to learn from those who compete in politics how politicians intend to employ that information for the good of the population.
