Conflicts in the workplace have elicited much concern among professionals. A growing number of scholars have agreed that fighting among the employees at the workplace is unavoidable since it is normal to have disagreements on issues. Fighting can be among individuals at the same level, employees and the management and even among different departments in an organization. If these fights are not managed properly then, the possibility of escalation is magnified immensely.

Hillman, D. R. (2014). Understanding multigenerational work-value conflict resolution. Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, 29(3), 240-257.

The authors of this article begin by enumerating the different sources of generational conflicts in the workplace. They figure out that this fighting that is as a result of age differences can severely affect the organizational environment. They focus their study on why there exists fighting between the older generation of workers and the current generation and the expectations difference between them. Finally, they find that a generational difference has a strong relationship with the type and number of conflicts that arise.

The differences in generation and their involvement to cause conflicts and in-fighting in an organization is brought out by the authors. They come up with predictors for conflicts within a generation and among different generations and how the management can handle the same. The authors use work-family variables to find out if the variables can predict fighting and synergy for each group and how they can be tackled. The three predictors selected were health, social support and the job type.

This article is concerned about the challenges that employers face in the modern workplace as a result of generational differences and how they should adjust to fit in the new generation. The authors reckon that employers must arm their employees with skills and information on understanding generational characteristics. The article finds that managers need to be proactive and initiate programs to prevent conflicts from getting out of hand. Such methods could include mentoring and effective communications that cater to each generation's preferences.
