Domestic Violence: Case Analysis

Introduction

An officer in the U.S. Army who is an active officer stationed at Fort Polk, Louisana and his girlfriend 24-year-old Sarah Parker who was arrested and charged for thwarting justice and failing to give a homicide report added to the shocking statistics of family violence. Logan Kyle in the 10th Mountain Division of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team and who was a 22-year -old by then, later confessed to killing her wife. The two got arrested when a police officer stopped their car to find a one year and another two-year-old child at the back, nonetheless, on opening the trunk the officer discovered his wife's body (Chambelian, 2018). The murder case comes at a backdrop of increasing family violence among active duty officers whose military life predisposes them to stress factors; such include combat and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Despite the limited research on the impact of the rigors of military life on family violence, Logan Kyle's case highlights the need to focus on the prevalence of family violence among military personnel. The conspiracy between Kyle and his girlfriend is likely to affect the young children who at the time of the arrest were with their father. Moreover, the case adds to the revelation that the victims of domestic violence are overwhelmingly women.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

According to Wallace & Roberson, (2016), intimate partner violence refers to violence committed by a spouse, a current or former boyfriend or girlfriend and is often a repeated offense that affects individuals of different socioeconomic, religious and cultural groups. Moreover, due to the high level of homosexuality acceptance in many states in the U.S. cases of same-sex violence are considered IPV and the victims get subjected to physical and psychological injuries. Logan Kyle was a married man who even had two children with her now deceased wife and the case is an example of Intimate partner violence. The active duty officer pleaded guilty. Nonetheless, it has not yet gotten established how the incident occurred, but it is highly likely that physical abuse was used to cause body trauma and subsequent death.

Effects of Domestic Violence on Toddlers and Infants

There are significant diverse challenges that children undergo as a result of family violence, both psychological, physical, and others physical. Children are significantly affected not only by witnessing violence as parents are abusing the other parent but also changed to a greater extent by the deaths resulting from violence. Consequently, such children's well being and developmental growth is impaired, toddlers and infants are also affected (Wallace & Roberson 2016). Children exposed to violence at infancy are often frightened, feel guilty, worried and anxious, worse off the effect is propagated and reflected later in their lives as they are more likely to carry violent behaviors to their adult lives.

Moreover, while the child might not get physically abused seeing parents fight has long-lasting emotional effects. In the case of Logan Kyle's children, the loss of their mum would affect their foundation and their sense of well-being security and safety; moreover, as their father would spend a long time in prison, they would lack parental care. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the parents to ensure that they maintain peace within their families for the good of their children if at all they cherish them.
