Working as an emergency scribe was one of my favorite and the most rewarding experience in my medical career. It gave me tremendous advantages in my career path as I acquired vast knowledge and a better understanding of the terminologies used in this profession. Most of the people that I worked with were supportive and informative, and they helped me to become a responsible health care professional. Working with doctors side by side gave me an incredible life experience and gave me the will to apply for further medical classes to perfect my skills. I love my experience as a scribe so much, and I am motivated to pursue it to greater heights.

In my line of duty, I have had the privilege to shadow Dr. Alibakshi, Dr. Amirani, and Dr. Ameri. In the year 2014 May, I got an opportunity to work with Dr. Alibakshi as a dental assistant where I worked for a few months until September 2015. I shadowed Dr. Amirani for one year; May 2016-August 2016 and I admit that I gained sufficient experience from this opportunity. Dr. Amirani is a cardiologist, and he performs numerous cardiac surgeries. He was a humble, informative, and a friendly cardiologist who would bring me to the surgical room and show me a couple of things. Often, he would always request me to be attentive as I watched and helped him during operations. This was during a summer period when I had gone to visit my aunt who happened to know Dr. Amirani. I always found the surgeries to be quite interesting, especially when I watched most patients recover successfully from the operations; and this motivated me to pursue my ambitions in this profession.

I also work for a rheumatologist, Dr. Ameri; as a scribe in her office, thus; I take critical signs for patients and hand them over to her for further analysis. The opportunity is perfect for me to learn more about numerous conditions that the patients are diagnosed with. I have enhanced my knowledge as a medical professional by watching her treat various types of patients with different conditions. I landed on this precious opportunity in January 2016, and I have kept it ever since. The significant knowledge and experience that I have acquired from working with her help me to assist patients that I meet on a daily note.

Currently, I still work for Dr. Amirani and the Doctors Community Hospital which I started to work for in August 2016; at Both, I perform my duties as a scribe. Briefly, I have shadowed for two doctors, for Dr. Ameri as a clinical scribe since January 2016 to present and Dr. Amirani as an ER Scribe. I have worked as a dental assistant for only one doctor, Dr. Alibakshi; and as a dentist assistant, I learned essential techniques of being an excellent dentist. I am grateful that I had all these opportunities that enhanced my knowledge and experiences in dealing with complex cases that I meet in my line of duty.

My most fascinating experience was watching Dr. Amirani removing a tumor from a young cancer patient. The tumor had spread to three organs and had affected the patients heart, Dr. Amirani literally took all the three organs out of the patients body, removed the tumor and put them back in the body. The most astonishing fact about this particular experience is that the patient successfully recovered from both the operation and cancer itself.

Community Service Activities

I have successfully participated in numerous community projects, had meaningful interactions, and learned significant lessons from these communities. I have worked as a volunteer at the American Red Cross in the year 2013 till now. During this period, I have helped in the preparation of food for various groups of people; I also assist in the distribution of shelters for the homeless people. The people in need of these commodities are mostly the victims of natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, forcefully evicted people such as victims of political violence, and the people living in risky geographical locations. After working for a year, in 2014-2016, I was assigned the tasks of getting people to donate blood for helping those in need of it, contributing to complete crucial paper works that are stored in the Red Cross database, and making essential communication such as answering and responding to urgent phone calls.

Through the opportunity of working with the American Red Cross since the year 2013, I have come across many scenarios about human suffering. I have known the importance of participating to eliminate human suffering and uplift the dignity of the humankind. It is quite disturbing to learn that people are suffering from hunger, lack of shelter, and extreme poverty while others have surplus commodities. For instance, the rich people dispose of food while the financially poor people have an insufficient supply of food. Thus, it is crucial to ensure that the needy people are given the assistance they require from the community. It is disturbing to watch people dying at the hospitals for lack of blood while there are many willing donors all across the world. Thus; as an organization based on the elimination of human suffering, it is fundamental to ensure that the hospitals are always stocked with blood to help save more lives in the cases of emergency.

My most meaningful interaction was with the homeless members of the community. We often spot people sleeping on pavements, outside the closed shops, and some even living in open areas with their kids. These scenarios are quite heartbreaking and show just how many people suffer in silence. As a concerned member of the American Red Cross, I have approached many homeless people to find out why they lack proper shelters and their responses were quite disturbing. Some were born on the streets and had literally spent most of their lifetime as homeless people; some were evicted for lack of rents and had nowhere to go, while some were victims of various catastrophes. A shelter is an essential need for any living person, and lack of it results in numerous problems such as diseases, insecurity, and lack of privacy. Thus; I use my position at the organization to organize shelters for the homeless people, I persuade the organization to develop cheap shelters for the groups of homeless people and help them out of the streets.

My most meaningful interaction was talking to Howard, an old homeless man who lived in the streets for more than thirty years. Howard narrated to me how hard it is to lack a safe place to call home, one lives by the grace of God and can fall victim to criminals and other risks that homeless people are exposed to. He also narrated about the many families that wish to get better shelters to secure their families but have no one to cry to. From this story, I learned the importance of participating in charity and community works as many lives are transformed in the process. We all want to see changes in our communities; but ironically, the majority of us tend to wait for others to create the changes we desire while we sit back and watch. However, each one of us needs to get out of his/her comfort zone and act towards the changes we want.
