Clinical scholarships for the DNP programs have aimed at supporting clinical research (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). According to the DNP essentials, the roles of a clinical scholar are using the discovery facts from various researches that are carried out in the doctoral education. Boyer states that the scholarship programs for the DNP scholars involve making discoveries and integration "reflecting the investigative and synthesizing traditions of academic life" (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). The investigative traditions in the scholarships will require the scholars to use scientific knowledge to find new approaches in practice (Anderson, Knestrick, & Barroso, 2015). The type of scholarship according to Boyer is the integration part where the scholars will need to integrate the new strategies and practice discoveries with the current practice through means like evidence-based practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Using the two types according to Boyer will have a positive index in the clinical practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). Application of the two approaches by a wound ostomy continence nurse practitioner in HAPU management will be helpful for both the patient and staff satisfaction.

The role of clinical scholars following the clinical scholarships is to apply the isolated clinical practice facts and relate these facts with other clinical disciplines through integration to develop a meaningful clinical outcome (Pritham, & White, 2016). For example, in the HAPU management, integrating the research facts with the current practice has a better practice that direct implementation of the new facts for the practice. Another role is to apply the knowledge in the clinical practice where they translate the research facts to real practice, dissemination of the new practices to other practitioners as well as integrating the new knowledge with the known proficiencies. This role serves the purpose of improving the clinical practice through implementation of new techniques and knowledge. Another role of the clinical scholars in their scholarship is to gather as much knowledge from a diverse set of sources and many disciplines which should be used in solving the practice problems in the clinical setting (Waldrop, et al., 2014). Following the clinical issues on HAPU management, different approaches have been used in the clinical setting where information can be gathered through the various means to manage HAPU cases.

Nurses in the wound ostomy continence will highly improve their practice standards if the keep the trace of how other places are doing in the management of HAPU cases (Gray, 2017). It is the role of a DNP scholar to employ research skills in the scholarship and gather the necessary skills for the advanced nursing care to gather knowledge. The application of these roles is to help in improving the reliability of the clinical practices which relies on competence and not years of experience (Garritano, Glazer, & Willmarth-Stec, 2016). For instance, well clinical research trials have a better clinical outcome when compared to regular practice. The wound ostomy nurses will need evident clinical methods and techniques to promote their practice in HAPU management and other wounds in line with a skin infection. The clinical scholars will, therefore, need to generate much evidence in the scholarship which will be integrated in practice to support the patient outcome and more so place publication of the evidence-based practices to disseminate the knowledge (Broome, Riner, & Allam, 2013).

The possible scholarship plans for wound ostomy continence nurse practitioner on completion of a doctoral degree is to have a well-established clinical approach that will improve the current clinical practices (Brown, & Crabtree, 2013). One of the recommendable plans is developing of evidence-based practice project in the clinical setting (Moran, Burson, & Conrad, 2017). The plan to implement evidence-based practice will improve the clinical outcome of the patients especially for the HAPU cases which require nurse practitioner attention. Another plan is to conduct a research program that will assist them in translating the new sciences as well as applying the scientific approaches in managing chronic infections. Improving the current career and planning for the future practices is also an essential plan for the wound ostomy continence nurses.
