Introduction
Nurses with practical professional standards have proved their level competent in every phase of nursing care. The hay has demonstrated a desired and achievable levels of performance against which there is a comparable spectrum. Professional standards are critical to the nursing profession since they enhance and regulate clinical practices. A professional nurse can evaluate themselves as well as their colleagues in a particular clinical direction to ensure the existence of proficiency and safety (Keyko, Cummings, Yonge, & Wong, 2016). More significantly, the professional's standards afford the nurses opportunity to devise a framework for developing clinical proficiency checklist or proficiency assessment for a specific clinical unit or area. Additionally, the professional standards enable the nurses to have the experiences of team management and to create policies and dynamically evaluate them. To be very competent and influential, nurses must consider themselves as professionals with the ability and responsibility to the current and future healthcare policies.
There are myriad opportunities that currently exist for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to participate in policy review for instance in Texas actively. RNs and APRNs can lead in the meaningful and ethical within their professional setting to change the direction of policies in their fields. They can also go beyond their area and step in the less-familiar world of policies and politics (De Simone, Planta, & Cicotto, 2018). This is because they should be playing a more significant role in advocacy. However, nurses are hit by various challenges. One of them is the inadequate inter-professional collaboration among health care professionals drawn from multiple disciplines. There is also the aspect nurse-to-patient ratio which is very high, and these hinder the policies of nurses - there in need of systematic campaigns that would enhance the collaboration among the health care providers. Governments should also initiate strategies to reduce the nurse-to-patient ratio for instance like it is done in California. To communicate the existence of opportunities for RNs and APRNs to participate in policy review, nurses should enlightened about their roles right from class (Lineberry & Ickes, 2015). Again, there should be campaigns to shed light for nurses about their responsibilities in policy review.
