The above research proposal will center its focus on analyzing and examining the theme of reputation in the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The research proposal will seek to outline and illustrate instances in which the theme of reputation has been depicted by the author. The main characters of the novel include the Bennett family, Mr. Darcy and the Bingley family.
The author uses the above characters to showcase the theme of reputation in various instances. For example, in the novel, Elizabeth Bennett arrives in Netherfield in muddy skirts. In the process, Miss Bingley gets shocked on how a woman would arrive at an in laws place in that condition (Austen, 83). The author of the novel showcases the idea that a womans reputation supersedes every issue and is the utmost importance. The aforementioned research would aim at analyzing the issue of reputations in women and how it makes women vulnerable to ostracism in the event that they go contrary of the social norms.
Similarly, the research will intend to determine the extent to which the theme of reputation is use to critique social structures in the society. In addition to the aforesaid, the paper will center it focus on the extent to which the theme of reputation seeks to accept inevitability of the social structures in the novel. Form the theme of reputation in the novel, the research will tend to compare the characters in the novel and relate with real life society. For a fact reputation is one of the most important factors individuals desire to maintain. For that reason, the research will also tend to analyze the theme of reputation with relation to class as in the above novel.
The intended preliminary sources to be used include an article by the Advanced Placement teaching Unit titled Pride and Prejudice. The author of the article relates the issue of reputation in the subject novel to England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when family place and marriage was considered to be of critical significance. The second preliminary source that would be used would Andrea Kristics article titled Marriage and Women in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The author of the aforementioned article basically focuses on how the women in the eighteenth century had no rights thereby had everything to lose in the event that there reputation was jeopardized. The third article to be used is Xiaoping Yus journal article titled Character - Driven Theme Analysis of Pride and Prejudice. The author in the article basically describes how certain characters in the novel are used to show how reputation in women was an important factor in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The fourth article to be used in the research is James Sherrys Pride and Prejudice: The Limits of Society. The article centers its focus on relating the events of the novel to how women valued reputation as their only way of self-importance two centuries ago. The fifth article to be used is Roberta Oliverias The Role of the Woman in the Family and Society in the Novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The main point of the article relevant to the study is the idea of how the women in the novel are sued to depict reputation as an important tool of pride two centuries back. Lastly, the research will utilize Mark Palmers piece Pride and Prejudice Education Pack. The main point to be utilized is one how the aforementioned author analyzes how characters in the novel depict the theme of reputation.
