It is hard to appreciate suffering in other parts of the world when you are living in the USA. Working for Live Beyond in Haiti exposed me to the challenges facing humanity. I interacted and helped people facing poor health conditions, poverty, and political problems. It reaffirmed my desire in pursuing a career path. It had the potential of shaping ambitions, redefining perceptions and convincing one to pursue a given career path that resonates with the need to serve people.
The peoples poor living conditions and the supportive activities I performed made me appreciate that nothing compares with the heart of helping alleviate human suffering. Some diseases such as infections from ringworm and scabies have been successfully contained in different parts of the world, but they continue to cause unmeasured suffering among other populations hence the need for active community health outreach programs. Additionally, I gained a practical understanding of various aspects of life that ensure proper human health. For instance, some ailments were attributed to improper sanitation and poor lifestyle practices. I also engaged in activities such as food distribution.
The vibrancy of the young population is a measure of any societys wellbeing. Innocent children still suffer and giving them hope and care was a comfort to empower change in their destiny. People often study to gain the right problem-solving skills within their localities, but a selfless person serves beyond their localities. The physical needs should be met first before performing religious ministry. Providing the basic needs like food and clothing simultaneously with preaching made the people of Thomazeau receive the message of salvation. We restored the hope of the unfortunate Haitians while providing them material needs.Visiting Haiti as a medical professional debunked this ideology that healthcare in the USA is similar across the world. I was more determined to pursue further medical studies. Some populations cannot access primary care. In the U.S.A, the physically disabled children have individual doctors and appropriate therapies to help them regain functional mobility. These children bore a lot of resilience. I developed compassion for the physically disabled children who would be functional if they had the same health facilities like in the United States of America
God uses humanity to do His work. I was set out to perform therapies for disabled children in Thomazeau, and this was Gods work. Nadia was physically disabled, but she eventually regained her functional ability signifying Gods hands. Haiti is not a pro-Christian nor does it profess any dominant religion. Live Beyond made it possible to enter the communities. Before inspiring them to embrace Gods word, we dealt with the presenting challenges first. Just like Nadia, I helped a disabled child recover her functional ability due to lack of proper restoration systems. People with long-term dental problems have become too sensitive even to the slightest touch. It is important to administer anesthesia before treatment. In the case of Haiti, identifying with peoples problems was our anesthesia. Many were brave to face their challenges.
Working in Haiti was a humbling experience. There is nothing as disturbing as seeing people living in destitution. After the mission, young children managed to walk through our physical therapy, and the hungry families got food, embraced Gods word, and their lifes value was renewed.
