About Erica Goldsons speech, Here I Stand students face many challenges in high schools. High school environments pose different situations to students. These situations either make them regarding education or break them down. This paper looks at some of the weaknesses and strengths experienced in high schools.
Most high school students at some point in life face bully in school. Bullying either direct or indirect causes physical and psychological inferiority complex in individuals. Students who face bullying in school most often perform poorly in class since they are not settled in their environment. In high school, we meet different people from diverse backgrounds. However, the peers w met in school can affect our education experiences negatively. Sometimes other students face rejection from their peers in schools. Peer rejection is a form of bullying that it is not from specific individuals. Peer rejection sometimes leads to depression and it is a weakness that needs attention in high schools.
Drugs and substance abuse are a weakness in many high schools and among students. Peer influence, self-discovery and expose to negative content in school and the media sometimes leads to drugs and substance use. Sometimes, it is just the excitement and curiosity that leads to trying new stuff and eventually one is hooked on drugs. The other weakness students in high school experience are when teachers fail to acknowledge their interest. Students passively participate in classes since their needs are ignored. It is quite hard to retain any information when one feels disconnected to certain norms and expectations. Schools should try to identify students interest and needs and find a suitable way to deliver that will be a win-win for both parties.
On the other hand, high school is not full of weaknesses. There are the other factor that makes high school interesting. First, the extra curriculum activities in secondary schools provide an excellent platform to develop individual skills and talents. People in schools come from different backgrounds, and some have unique abilities that need to be natured. Extra curriculum activities in schools provide the platform to better the skills and interests of student. The ability of high school offering a different and competitive ground for learning is strength. Students get to learn and socialize with people from a different background. The diversity in high schools provides a platform to acquire new things and form meaningful relationships with people. Conversely, the high school experience helps students develop good decision-making skills and evaluation abilities.
Finally, students and teachers have a role in developing the strengths of the experiences in high schools. Building on the strengths while working on the weaknesses will help better the experiences and views students have about high school. Besides schools should seek students views and merge them with heir own to better schools. Schools should also lessen the focus on controlling and impose the passing mentality but aim to grow these students mentally and socially.
