In 1968 a Non-Proliferation Treaty was established to control the spread of ownership of the nuclear weapons by various nations across the world (Podhoretz, 78). Different countries have signed the treaty since its formulation, but some have not. Those who have the nuclear facilities are required to use them for peaceful activities responsibly. The reason for control is to avoid nations using the nuclear weapons against each other which may destroy the world due to a possible third world war. Iran and Israel are countries with constant feuds over border issues, and this creates a perfect opportunity for a nuclear war between the two nations which will attract their allies to join in aid of the other and hence a global war. Israel is already equipped with the nuclear weapons while Iran is not, it could be hard for Israel to attack unarmed Iran due to global concern that may arise (Podhoretz, 78). However, if both nations are allowed to have nuclear weapons, nothing can stop them from attacking each other which will later provoke the demonstration of might by applying their nuclear weapons. For this reason, it would be best to use all the necessary force to ensure Iran is not equipped with nuclear weapons.

Iran and North Korea are among the nations that signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty in the 1970 but have decided to violate it (Podhoretz, 79). People who violate an agreement that is meant to promote peace in the society for selfish interests, shows they have an evil intention. For such violations, they deserve to be penalized as provided by the treaty alongside other punitive measures. The USA and nations such as German and Britain have been in intense negotiations with Iran to have talks on stopping its nuclear programs in vain. Iran has defended itself that its her sovereign right to develop the nuclear and furthermore for a peaceful reason. Economic and other forms of sanctions have been applied to Iran, but still, it went ahead with its nuclear programs.

Reports by American scientist Federation and the director of international atomic energy agency visited the Iran nuclear plant and gave a contradicting report concerning the progress and purpose of Iran nuclear activities (Podhoretz, 80). The Iranians claimed its for creating a regular cycle of energy for civilian consumption, but the reports indicated the progress and process were clear that they could also be parallel to making the nuclear weapons. This report makes it a need for Iran to be stopped by all means, since they are hiding their uranium activities and who know about the intentions.

In 1980s Iran was in an eight-year war with Iraq which used some chemical weapons against Iran. Through such experience, Iran was prompted to formulate nuclear weapons and become the region super power (Podhoretz, 83). Iran was also not happy with American interfering with its activities and acquiring the nuclear weapons would make them equals with America. The situation is a clear indication that Iran should not be allowed to have the weapons since they have all the wrong reasons to contain them. It would disrupt not only peace in the Middle East but also across the globe.

In conclusion, Norman Podhoretz is right by saying the Iranians should be stopped from developing nuclear weapons. The outcome would be detrimental to the world since they want the nuclear for all the wrong reasons. The need for power to do as they please is not a conducive feeling for global peace, and all means should be applied to stop them.
