Introduction

In the early 90s, the missionaries and explorers from European countries travelled with the aim of exploring new areas. They, however, brought negative feedback about Korea which they shaped its image as a country of morning calm or hermit kingdom which meant it was a forbidden land. The Western countries described Korea as poor, dirty and more so primitive from the writers who had earlier came in search of knowledge about it. The overall image of Korea by travelers from European countries was inclusive of having an immutable state of stagnation, a dull country with nothing in it and also lack of vitality. Bird and Curzon are explorers from the Western countries who write of how Korea consists of people with no purpose in life. It is described as a decaying country which resists reform throughout the slums and palace. Seoul both the two explorers negatively perceive a city in Korea. They elaborate their descriptions employing negative adjectives only like filthy and unclean.

Koreans on the other hand also had negative images regarding the Americans in the nineteen century. They viewed any white person who entered into a relationship with Korean men as trespassing and observed those coming with Korean women as mistreatment. Moreover, they were considered as prostitutes, having a tendency to gamble and consisting of a vice economy. Koreans described them as communists who are sneaking into a country which is not there's and being squeaky in a foreign land. They saw them as intruders wanting to grab their land and unsatisfactory of where they came from. The two nations shaped each other antagonistically creating huge disagreements between themselves in the late nineteen century.

A majority of western people view the Koreans as having unattainable beauty standards. This is because the country has several plastic surgery clinics in every city than anywhere else in the world. There are different images of girls who are believed to have western eyes as well as identical shaped "v chins." In as much as some of them were born like this, the western people believe that girls are taking drastic measures to change the way they look starting from a young age.

Subsequently, Koreans believes that all white persons along the streets are Americans. This mainly because a majority of Koreans watch US TV dramas and Hollywood movies. Thus, this makes them develop mental pictures of Americans since a majority of white people in Korea comes from Canada and the US. This notion upsets the non-American friends because the Koreans continuously ask them if they come from America only because they are white.

Mrs. Bush was born from a conservative Christian family, and her role was to explore remote countries across the world. Mrs. Bush caught a lot of attention after pointing out that the Koreans are lazy in nature. Therefore, this notion created a lot of negative images about the Koreans. As a consequence, her sincerity about the Koreans and the content of her book was distorted. It is important to note that, she significantly valued the merits of Koreans and she was determined to discuss strong facts about Korea. She depicted that, the Korean people's potential was being undermined mainly by corruption which was predominant in the upper class.
