Introduction

What every interaction desires are the need for clear and effective communication, an effective communication is a form of communication between two or more individuals wherein the intended message is successfully delivered, received and understood. In other words, Arkoudis (2014) suggests that, a communication is considered effective when all the parties; sender and receiver in the communication, give the same meaning to the message and listen cautiously to what has been spoken and make the sender feel heard and comprehend. Therefore, the effectiveness of how one communicates determines whether the message will be received as intended and the reaction that will be assumed by the intended audience. The effective communication comprises of not only the manner in which one uses the words but also entails several other communication skills such as an ability to understand own emotions, non- verbal communication engaged listening, and ability to speak adamantly. An effective communicator has the capability to deliver a speech that meets the expectation of the audiences. Hence, the audience receives the intended message with a lot of ease since, the information flow steadily through the media from the sender to the receiver moreover, the speaker should be able to connect properly with his audience in the best way possible to ensure that the message delivered takes the shortest time possible. A good speech connects effectively with the audience and the purpose of the speaker is achieved. Trump as a speaker was able to master the art of public speaking over the many years he has been a public figure. His rally in Phoenix was by all standards effective and he achieved his intended goal. The public attended and listened to him and by how the people were reacting during delivery of speech one could tell that a relationship in the communication process had already been created. Partly, it was his rhetorical skill that assisted him defies the odds to become the Republic candidate, despite articles and pools prophesying his doom. For a long time, Trump had been controversial in his statement, while at the same time brilliant in how he communicates the message. One of his speeches during the campaign period that shows Trump as timely speaker, his ability to use of propaganda language and confusing language, his ability control over the news cycle, and, confidence in him as an effective speaker is Phoenix Speech.

Timing

Timing delivery is usually significant and Trump illustrated it in his speech in Phoenix. Timing matters on a grander scale and by the time he was realizing this speech has been the ideal time for Trump to give search a speech. Disillusionment with the U.S government and the need for anti-establishment figure mirrors entrenched divisions: fault line of immigration, illegal flow of drugs, cash, guns, and, people across the US border, and presences of cartels in American businesses (THE CONVERSATION, Para 3). Such an environment made his speech flourish since his speech tends to serve the quest of information his supporters were eagerly waiting because people were tired and overwhelmed by insecurity issues that were existing between Mexico and American borders.

Use of Propaganda

Before his speech in Phoenix, Trump had faced protests against him by the people who were utterly opposed to him and his way of doing things. In his speech, he referred to the demonstrations but told the audience that according to the secret service, there were not so many people-protesting outside, which was not true. It was reported that the number of anti-Trump protesters was high. However, by referring to the secret service, he was able to appear more credible in saying that the protesters were few (Trump, 1). People would trust him more by citing the secret service as the source of the information he shared. In public speaking, the source of information offered to the public will determine whether the audience believes it or not. Secret service was mandated to protect Trump, and thus he made people think that the protesters were minimal and safe for him. The tactic was effective since he made the audience believe that those protesting against him were very few and thus he was still popular in America (Coopman et al. 14).

In addition, he embraced incoherent speaking style as he was releasing the Phoenix speech. At one instance, he articulated that "I will build a great wall-and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me-and I'll build them very inexpensively....'' (FACT CHECK, Para, 5) Such comment made the speech to meet an extensive mockery. It is unusual for politicians to use such kind of language. However, this method is effective because it allows politicians to speak like an ordinary citizen. This style made the speech confusing; hence, audiences were forced to pay close attention to drive the sense of his words. By listeners, focusing more implies that they are more likely to be persuaded. Similarly, he uses simple language to convey his message. This leaves an impression that politics is straightforward, thus acknowledging people do not have extra time to go and research what the speech was meaning.

Initially, he faced criticism for his statement on Charlottesville. However, in his speech in Phoenix, Trump repeated what he had said but not entirely. At first, he had blamed all groups opposing each other. In Phoenix, he only repeated the part where he condemned the violence but did not delve so much into it intending to discredit those against him as dishonest (Trump 1). Choice of words and what to say in public speaking is crucial in determining how people receive the message. The truth is, he had condemned both sides but knowing very well that it might work against his speech effectiveness, he chooses to say what would make people happy by making them believe dishonest people misquoted him. For a speaker to be effective it is vital for him to say things that will not make the audience angry otherwise, he might be forced to cut short his speech. The tactic of telling people what they want to hear was effective for Trump (Coopman et al. 22).

Controlling the News Cycle

In the entire speech, Trump appears to be able to feed newspapers with excellent stories at will. For instance, when he was attacking media for taking sides, he took an example of one of his speech that in it he had condemned racism and regarded it evil but the media did not do a cover of it "I said racism was evil. Did they report that I said racism was evil? No." he further condemns the high rating CNN happens to received. Early in August, CNN released new data illustrating that its ratings are vigorous. According to the report:

"Year to date, 2017 is pacing to be CNN's highest on record in Total Day among total viewers and highest among 25-54 since 2003. 2017 is also pacing to be CNN's second-largest audience since 2008 in primetime among 25-54 and total viewers." (FACT CHECK: 10 Statements from Trump's Phoenix Speech, 2017)

Trump is his speech claims that, CNN is sad and their rating is rapidly going down. Trump implants an idea that the media disregards the good things that he talks about and does and uses him as a platform of making money by putting spotlight on the topic will sum most of the view from the American people. This is considered by revere attack, which is very effective in generating a false equilibrium.

Trump in the entire speech maintains eye contact when delivering his message to the audience. This shows that he has confidence in himself in whatever he is saying regardless whether it is correct or wrong, he manages to depict his message as the only truth. A person who does not maintain eye contact with the audience appears like a liar or weak and is never believed (Coopman et al. 30). Therefore, through the maintenance of his eye contact with his audience, he was able to show sincerity and integrity.

Trump had faced a lot of criticism and negative media coverage throughout his campaigns, the rally in Phoenix included. However, he was able to overcome all the negative coverage, communicate effectively to the audience in Phoenix, and deliver his message at the correct timing, by using of language full of propaganda and confusion , controlling the new cycle and, show confidence in himself through maintaining his eye contact with his audience. All elements that Trump embraced shows he was well acquainted with the art of communicating effectively and tactfully helped him convince the audience to vote for him. A public speaker should tactfully overcome the challenges that come with public speaking to deliver his message effectively. Trump managed to do that in Phoenix.
