Nursing is a chosen career for many people. It is a career that has an impact on people lives and is very demanding. Nurses need to have career goals that drive them in their daily nursing practice. The goals are both short term and long term. This paper covers my goals as a professional nursing practitioner.

Short Term Goals

Obtain a Nursing License

A nurse needs to obtain the required authorization from government authorities. This authorization certifies that the nurse is qualified to practice and is competent enough to be trusted with patients. It will be achieved by working hard in class and for the license exams. The exams are not easy, but with hard work, one can pass in their first attempt.

Impeccable Communication Skills

A good nurse must endeavor to be an excellent communicator. Nursing as a profession involves explaining to the patient and answering their health questions; thus, communication is vital (De Milt et al., 2011). Communication is a skill that is not entirely achievement through the teaching in class, and therefore, one must endeavor to learn and gain the ability. One can gauge whether he is an excellent communicator by the feedback they get from the patient and supervisors and know where to adjust since, in communication, we are all work in progress. The other form through which interaction is measurable is how satisfied and happy the clients are to interact with you and to ask questions. One can get excellent Communication skills by doing voluntary public speaking events and getting into group discussion s to apply the skills learned. At the same time, you encourage your peers to guide and give you feedback.

Clinical Mastery

As a fresh graduate of nursing school, you may not have mastered the field well. Clinical mastery is a short-term goal.2-year Experience in nursing practice will help you learn what nursing practice entails and become effective at it. It can be achieved easily by working closely with physicians and experienced nursing practitioners. They guide you and correct you when you are wrong .Yu will know that you have achieved clinical mastery when you can perform all roles of a nurse without seeking clarification from your peers all the time (Thompson & Thompson, 2018).

Long-Term Goals

Achieve Masters' Level in Nursing

Furthering your studies as a nurse gives you more competence in the field. It exposes you to more advanced practice theories. At masters level; you gain more extensive knowledge in clinical nursing practice. To achieve this goal you need to put your finances in order so that you can pay the required fees. You will measure this goal by you join the school and graduating within your set time (Thompson & Thompson, 2018).

Communicate in Three International Languages

Nurses work in diverse communities. Diverse communities have different languages, and it is a good idea for a practicing nurse to learn different styles to able to help the majority of the patients without a language barrier (Watson, 2009). The goal is to learn and communicate fluently in French and Spanish. It will be an addition to my English language. One can attain this through enrolling in languages class and purchase self-help books as well as internet sources. The plan is to achieve the goal within 3-4 years. It is measurable by you being able to fluently communicate with French and Spanish speaking patients with ease within four years.

Set up a Community Clinic

Having a positive impact on the community is a dream. It is a goal for in my nursing career. I have a goal to start a community clinic in my home county, where cervical cancer screening will be free for women within the reproductive age. Working with the community will be an experience of its own because mostly you practice nursing at a family level. You become part of the city, and when they are healthy, you are happy (Thompson & Thompson, 2018). It is a goal that can be achieved within five years and measurable by having a sound financial plan, and the goal measured by opening up the clinic in the community.

Conclusion

These goals and many others which are personal define a nursing professional. A nursing practitioner should have goals that propel the career growth. Goals, honesty, versatility, and diversity as a nurse are essential qualities to achieve the set goals.
