Introduction
Communication is an integral part of our lives. We need to communicate and understand one another. Then there are the aspects that are there in multicultural communication where people of different cultures have to communicate and try to understand. This is usually a big barrier in this and the people have to create an understanding.
Gaming is an interactive activity that needs communication and the players need to communicate. The invention of multiplayer games have brought in the need to know how to communicate to others and this has seen the rise in multiplayer gaming sites.
When playing a game there is usually communication between the players. The different types of gamers will always have different ways that they will communicate using and these gamers will always understand one another.
When two different gamers meet and play there will always be aspects of friction as each one will play his or her style. It means that communication will be a bit strained and the players will need to communicate to understand one another.
The use of intercultural communication will always look for ways that the people who are different communicate and understand one another. This paper seeks to discuss the different types of gamers that we have and how they usually communicate in multiplayer games.
The writing looks at the communication to be made by the different gamers because they will always be different in the sense that the different gamers play differently hence they communicate differently. Some gamers can be the extreme opposite of others and become difficult when they are playing especially in terms of communication.
The types of gamers and how they communicate in multiplayer games is a good attribute to the forms of intercultural communication. The rise of online multiplayer gaming has seen the research venturing in how these gamers play and communicate across these platforms with differences in culture (Wiggins, 2011). The discussion here ventures into those aspects that characterize these gamers and this can give the picture of the type of communication that takes place and how the communication is handled.
The first type of game is the Super competitive gamer. This gamer has only one objective, he isn't playing just to have fun or to pass time, no he is in the game to win and seriously win. This gamer will take every game seriously and there is no day that you will say you are having a nice time or pastime.
Every game to him counts. The only objective in every game for thus super competitive gamer is to win and only win (Ntina, Ma & Deng, 2015). They will enjoy only when they have thrashed their opponents mercilessly.
They will celebrate and they will utter all means of celebration words when they have outscored, outplayed and outwitted their opponents. Woe unto you if before the game you had in a way demeaned him. He will use this chance to smear at you and call you all sorts of names like amateur, millennial and all others (Gerber & Scott, 2010). When they are playing they will have serious faces and will put 100% attention and concentration on the game.
They take every single game as the battle of their life and they never accept defeat at all times. They will never accept to be beaten especially by friends. When they have been defeated they will give all sorts of excuses and demand a rematch.
They will go from one game, then ask for best of three, then as for five then ask for a whole tournament all in the name of wanting to defeat their friends. Once they get a win they will celebrate wildly and they won't accept a rematch. If they don't get a win they will give an excuse that they were not prepared and they will go and prepare for the next match. They cannot just take defeat as an option. Winning is their language of communication and will always challenge people when they don't win the games.
The second type of gamer is the one we call the Backseat Gamer. These like shouting instructions to others more than actually playing the game. They are not fancy to playing the game. In any gaming session they like taking the backseat and shout instructions at others.
They like telling others why they are not playing well, why they have been defeated as well as how they should have played (Ntina, Ma & Deng, 2015). They will never accept to play against anyone, they are afraid of the controller but they like shouting and yelling instructions to their friends who are playing.
They know that they are not good players and if they try to play they will be minced and outplayed so what they do is accompany friends and they just contribute through making funny commentary. When they are commentating one can think that they are the best game players the universe and the whole galaxy will ever have. They will always be noisy and ask a lot of questions. When their friend is being thrashed that is when they will feel good as they will have a chance to laugh at them, telling them what they could have done better.
They are a pain to be with because of their noise and all-knowing character (Snaith, 2007). They will be putting comments like, "What, why are you playing like this?" "Don't use long balls, possess the ball first, shoot" "I told you not to use that team see now you have been made a mincemeat" Backseat gamers are hard to withstand because of all this and one can easily lose patience with them very fast. They make a game look very chaotic and they thrive where chaos are the order of the day. The more the noise and chaos the better they become at making noise to the players.
Then we have the third type of game who is the gambler. This type of game does not look at playing a game is interesting if there are no stakes. He believes that the game can only be interesting if there is a stake at the end of the game.
This kind of game is not afraid of losing money at all but any game must have something to win for (Ntina, Ma & Deng, 2015). They will be ready to bet anything whether it is their savings, lunch money or any kind of betting that they see as possible. Some will even go to the extent of promising to do for their competitors their duties in the event they are defeated. This they do because they believe they cannot lose and they get pleasure in seeing their opponents paying the price.
They will always play their 'A' game when the stake is there and they will unleash all manners of techniques to make sure they are not beaten by their opponents. When they are playing a game that does not have a stake they will always play lowly and they will look like amateurs (Snaith, 2007). They will always be over prepared for a game and their language of communication is stake and winning (Beedle & Wright, 2007). They are huge risk takers and they always hope that there staking will always pay off. They look at any game as a way to make something out of their money and this sometimes does not pay off at all.
The old-school gamer is the kind of gamers that were left in the traditional gaming when the others moved and made the transition to the technologically advanced gaming. They stuck to their guns in the old gaming systems and anything to do with the modern gaming they are not part to it. They will have the old-school games and they will still play without feeling being odd.
They worship these games and they will never want to migrate to the new and modern types of games. They like the games that have retro styled and they will challenge people to these games because they know that they will always win against the people who are playing the modern games.
They will always go and try the modern games and they will be defeated and instead of conceding to defeat they will start comparing the games to their old school games, how the modern games are not fun to play and how much the old school games are still the best because people who play the are the intelligent ones (Snaith, 2007). They will always talk about how the modern games are too much computer assisted and that the player does not play so much.
They will use all these excuses and they will finally retreat to their old games and feel comfortable there. For them the old games are the order of the day and that the modern games are no longer fun as they involve the computer so much and that makes them not fun to play. Their language of communication is old-school. These thrive in games that are old school and will never challenge in the modern gaming technology.
We have the destructive game whose main objective in any game is not just winning but how they win. They like winning with records and they will always leave a bad taste to the loser. They are very much interested in destroying everything I their way to winning. They like leaving their trail everywhere they like to go. They always are out of their way to find ways that they can win the game in a destructive way.
When in multiplayer situations their main aim is to beat their opponents in a way that they will remember for the rest of their lives (Snaith, 2007). They like leaving records behind by the way they win. For instance when they are playing football they will make sure they win the game in all manners, they win the possession, the passing, the skills and also win the game in a way that even after the game the opponent cannot talk because he has been destroyed by the gamer. What they like is to make sure that the opponent in multiplayer games won't have any excuse or anything to complain about.
Joy comes to them when they have won all the aspects of the game against their opponents and they will look for ways to always destroy their opponents in the game. They will even go to the point of real-life competitors when they are playing, multiplayer games (Snaith, 2007). They are usually an absolute force of nature and they will leave footprints in any game. They do this to communicate to other gamers that they are a force to reckon and the other gamers to fear them. When playing they will make sure they beat the best gamer and the others will most definitely fear playing against them for this reason.
Another type of gamer who is close to destructive gamers is the trophy hunter type of gamer. Just like the destructive gamers, the trophy hunter does not look at winning only but how he or she wins. When playing against a certain opponent the trophy hunter wants to win in all the aspects of the game. They will always make sure that they play in all ways to be winners in every part of the game (Snaith, 2007). They will make sure that they have won all aspects of the game. They will always want to win even the smallest of the accomplishments even if it does not mean anything in the game.
They look for all these and sometimes they are defeated in them game. Nut they will use these small achievements to talk about their gaming skills. They make sure before they play they have the latest skill in the game so as to use it to mock his opponent. They will use the latest skill and after then game spend a lot of the time talking about they used the skill to beat their opponent, how much they have learnt in that skill and that they are the best in that skill (Snaith, 2007). For them winning does not amount to winning if one has not used the latest techniques, skills and tricks to win.
Winning only becomes winning when it has been combined with the latest skills in the game. They communicate in terms how much they know the game than their opponent and how they can use skills their opponents cannot use. They spend most times practicing skills before they can face their opponents so that they can go and showcase their skill and how much they know about it.
The next type of gamer is the puzzler who is the type of gamer who enjoys working out his brain out. This ga...
