Introduction
Nutrition over the years, according to Hawl et al., (p. 104) has changed its meaning. From the very beginning of the time of Science, nutrition has primarily been defined as having a balanced diet or meal all through. As time went on, this definition has taken a beating and changed to what it entails to have a balanced diet. Some have gone to the extent of counting the number of calories they are willing to take into their bodies. All these are well accepted, but the study will be approached differently when looking into nutrition. For one to have a balanced diet, he or she must take into account that a meal or dish has to offer your body from calories, to the amount of cholesterol and the after-effects of that dish to your physique (Hawl et al., 117). I propose we look at both the body and soul which will take a more holistic view of the subject. This means that I will bring up religion, specifically Christianity and how it is used to guide us in having a full balanced diet.
The Culture
The Bible primarily defines the culture of eating as the lust of the flesh. For instance, according to the book of 1 John chapter 2 verses sixteen to 17a, a man is generally supposed to take enough food for the body to grow and develop and not overfeed. The food industry in the United States of America is mostly controlled and overtaken with fast food and genetically modified foods. E. Eyre also noted that the craze of fast food restaurants popping up all over the country is destroying lives and the health of citizens in this great nation. The problem with fast food eateries being all over the place is that they are programming you to believe that you are hungry and thus you end up eating more than you need in the body, thus causing an imbalance in the body that could lead to high cholesterol and heart attacks.
The Cultural view of food boils down to how you raise your children and the values you instill in them such as leaving healthy and taking better care of their bodies since they are considered temples of the Lord. The bible also shows how we should raise kids according to his word. For instance, Proverbs chapter 22 verses one to twelve, they all go on about how one should teach their kids in the way of the Lord, and they shall never depart in them. Proverbs chapter twenty-three from verse nineteen to twenty-one further pushes the fact that if one is continually indiscipline about how they treat their bodies and are continually stuffing themselves with food and alcohol that is not required. The repercussions are deadly both financially, and health-wise since all that you are mostly doing is throwing money away and wasting food. Considering consuming too much alcohol may lead to alcohol poisoning and other significant conditions such as cirrhosis which is cancer of the liver. These conditions are rather costly to treat and may lead to family or individual to financial ruin.
The excessive intake of food according to Hawks et al. (2003), is that the body surpasses the optimum level of digestion and absorption of the body. The study also discovered that college women with lower spiritual levels correlated higher levels of emotional eating. For a Christian it shows that the food that is being taken into the body is not being absorbed, but instead, it is just traveling through the digestive system without any purpose and overworking it at the same time. This finding is essential and crucial considering that in the book of Romans chapter 12 verses one to two, the Bible emphasizes preserving the body to acceptable standards. Emotional eating or binge eating may lead to some medical conditions such as obesity, and eating disorders. Hawks' study goes ahead to state that this would be a public health issue in the future.
Conclusion
The Bible is one of the oldest documents to have been written. It has survived the test of time which makes it plausible that some of the answers when are looking for in life and through scientific experiments. And studies may be right before our eyes that the only thing required is discipline and we could be able to get rid of some of these diseases that are more deliberate than just accidental. Religion and Science may name things differently, but in the end, the message is still the same. They both maintain that taking care of you and avoiding tendencies that lead to excessive consumption whether it is alcohol or food. For instance, the author E. Eyre warns about consuming too much fast food as it destroys the health of people. The bible on the other hand ho God caution people to eat food that will satisfy their bodies and not eat. This, according to God is lust. Hawk et al., also caution about excess alcohol and food and how it surpasses of digestion. The best thing is to ingest them in moderation, which will lead to the body performing in peak physical condition because it leads to spiritual satisfaction and better self-esteem on the individual.
