Question 1:Police officers are trained to use different methods of patrols with the aim of reducing or eliminating crime, incidents and the accidents. Fundamentally, various factors are considered in the forms of patrol applied and included size of the area, costs, and the safety of the officer and the levels of existing security. As a way of policing patrol, community patrol entails giving the officers the mandate to protect a particular section of the city or a residential area. These patrols involve the combination of foot, vehicle or bicycle. The random patrols, on the other hand, require the police patrols which often appear sporadically and unexpectedly in particular areas. The main aim of this type is usually to deter a criminal activity at a given time. Similarly, the strategic patrols are those that are directed to the regions where the level of crime is tremendous. They may be based on the historical evidence, tips from the public. Finally, the pro-active patrols are those that are aimed at preventing the crime, maintaining law and order, reducing the fear of offense.
Living in areas with high rates of criminal activities requires the use of strategic patrol, as the mechanisms to combat crime. The use of automobiles in high-crime regions often facilitates the deterrence of the crime in a more efficient manner. However, the officers using methods such as foot and bikes may significantly impact the perspective and relationship with the police. Ideally, the motorized patrol and rapid response may not be able to demonstrate warmth and fuzziness but are more efficient and necessary. On the other hand, those using foot and bikes may not adequately handle the rapid response issues but will instill the perspective of working in partnerships to identify and solve the problems. Residents will perceive this approach as collaborative and proactive models that help officers naturally handle the reported crimes.
Question 2:
The seminal study of patrol effectiveness was the Kansas City preventive experiment carried out with the aim of testing the level of patrolling strength (Miller, 2000). As a result, there were no significant differences in the reported crime, fear, traffic accidents, public perception, and arrests. It was concluded that the routine preventive patrol is marked police cars have little in the prevention of crime or installing safety to citizens.
As an officer with control over what is happening in the territory, I will fulfil my duties through the application of effective policing approaches, based on the high-crime rate in the area. To improve the effectiveness of the police agencies, I will implement a variety of strategies and methods that are aimed at combating crime and stimulate the public safety. In this way, my approaches will extend beyond the traditional models of responding to calls for services. My tasks will mainly seek to facilitate the crime prevention, rapid response, and intervention. On a wider note, I will employ the strategies such as community outreach, efficient resource distribution, crime mapping, crime data collection and the suspect location. Finally, I will also work with the teams of specialized trained police officers and engage them in different types of patrol for the specific sections within the area. This collaboration will offer an adequate coverage in the places whereby the patrols are required most (Stevens, 2009)
