Introduction
As the proverb states "a good reader is a good writer." Teachers have sought to continually develop strategies to improve the language abilities of their learners. Research on the impacts of reading on writing skills has confirmed that extensive reading can potentially enhance writing skills. Reading has been considered a difficult task since many do not attain this satisfaction for writing. Reading skill is composed of a series of challenges and the outcome for the students is poor writing production. Various reasons underscore the importance of extensive reading on writing skills. First, there is a link between reading achievement and writing skills which is supported by the fact that better readers make better writers. Second, there is a relationship between the quality of writing and reading experience since better writers read extensively compared to writers who read less. Third, there is a relationship between the ability to read and extent of syntactic complexity in writing since as better reader produce writing which is syntactically correct compared to poorer readers. However, some studies have shown reading instructions are not effective in improving writing. This persuasive paper seeks to support the claim increasing or improved potentially enhances writing skills, and these points underscore the claim.
Reading achievement is correlated to writings skills since it is evidenced that better readers make better writers. Reading is an essential skill as it aids the learning and acquisition of knowledge as experience. Research on the effects of reading on writing skills has shown that the ability to read helps develop writing skills (Ershadi and Syarfi 4). This because better readers come in contact with rules of grammar. It means that they can formulate language structure, grammar and improve their vocabulary (Ershadi and Syarfi 4). It can be concluded that reading is a necessity for improving writing since it provides the necessary input for the development of writing skills. Reading will act as a primary model to develop writing skills. It is, therefore, appropriate to state that becoming a better reader or improving readings will positively impact on writing skills.
It has been established that the quality of writing is correlated with the reading experience. There is a tendency for better writers to become better readers. These readers read their work in addition to other different reading materials. Some studies have sought to examine the impact of reading experience on writing skills (Langer and Flihan). For example, a study by Stotsky in 1983 provided to enhance writing skills by providing reading experience instead of grammar practice or increased writing practice. This study established the benefits of reading experience in improving writing skills (Stotsky 636). It is also important to point out that reading experience was found to have more benefits in writing skills compared to grammar study or increase writing practice. Also, literary models have been reported to have substantial positive effects on writing skills. It can be concluded that reading experience has a positive impact on writing skills.
Additionally, a correlation has been established between reading ability and writing skills. Those who have increased reading ability to produce syntactically correct writing. It means that better readers tend to develop syntactically correct writings. A research conducted by Loban in 1963 established a relationship between high reading scores and the quality of writing (Stotsky 630). The research was conducted on the correlation between comprehension, and types of sentences and structures patterns in compositions by Grade two and three students. It was established that the increment in reading comprehension improved the utilization of compound and complex sentences (Stotsky 630). It is important to understand that a writer uses words in communicating the message to the audience. After the selection of the appropriate words in the conveyance of meaning, these words need to be arranged to express their intention. Readers with better reading ability tend to have a wide correction of words which can be arranged syntactically to form correct meaning. It can be concluded that increased reading ability is essential in the production of syntactically correct writing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this paper sought to establish the relationship between reading and writing skills. Different studies have established that reading help in improving the quality of writing skills. Writing competence has emerged to be impacted by increased self-motivated reading. It, therefore, means that there is a link between reading and writing skills. This essay has established that reading achievement in related to writing skills which means that there is a tendency for better readers to become better writers. Also, writing quality is a closely related experience which translate to the conclusion that better writers read more in comparison to poorer writers. Lastly, the essay established that there is a relation between the ability to read and the quality of writing in the syntactic context. This means due to the ability to read, better readers usually produce syntactically correct writings. These three reasons discussed in this paper provides evidence that reading has positive impacts on writing skills.
