Introduction
Dr. Nido Qubein is the HPU president. I have learned numerous lessons from his presentation. Dr. Qubein delivers inspirational messages that build personal core values. Through Dr. Qubein, I have learned that values are important in guiding a person through decision making. Values are part of our daily life especially when studying. My three core values are accountability, competence, and creativity. My core values are intertwined with my goals as a student. My goals include; attaining good grades, attaining new skills and have the ability to apply what I learn in the classroom to my future career.
My core value of accountability is illustrated by my willingness to take responsibility for my actions. Dr. Qubein lectured that accountability creates tremendous positive energy to embrace and incorporate everything that is done either individually or collectively. Every time I feel that I am responsible for my grades. I strive hard to ensure that I do not fail and become a disappointment to our family. I also learned that to attain new skills; I have to be answerable to something within my power or control. I, therefore, ensure that I use my skills wisely to avoid creating a negative impression. I believe that I am accountable for applying what I learn in the classroom to my future career. If I fail to apply the skills learned in school to my future career, I will hold myself responsible for my failure.
I believe that I am competent in everything that I do, either in school or the outside environment. During the course, I learned that competence enables an individual to carry out activities. Through competence, I believe that I will achieve my goals. Competence will build my capacity to integrate what I learned in class and transform it into attaining good grades. The knowledge and skills associated with my major will enable me to integrate and apply the lessons learned in class to my future career. As Dr. Qubein noted, competence acts as the foundation for the future career. My creativity has been reinforced over time during the course. Dr. Qubein has facilitated the development of my creative skills. I have learned creativity encompasses character and personality. I have always believed that to attain good grades; I have to harness my creativity. Most assignments given by our professor are challenging and require a creative mind to find a solution. Being a creative person, I have previously attained good grades. However, I hope to nurture my creativity skills to attain better grades than the ones I am getting. I also believe that my creativity skills learned from Dr. Qubein will enable me to apply every concept I have learned in class to my future career.
I believe that I can apply the SMART goals method to define my objective of attaining good grades. The SMART goals denote: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely goals.
- Specific - My goal to attain good grades is specific. This way, I can focus my efforts and feel motivated to attain them. Attaining good grades is important in ensuring that I get a chance to prosper in my future career.
- Measurable - My objective to achieve good grade is measurable. This way, I able to keep track of my progress and remain inspired. I am also able to remain focused, set my study timetable and feel the joy of getting closer to attaining the desired grades.
- Achievable - Attaining good grades is achievable. Although I feel that I stretch out my capabilities, I always believe that I am capable of attaining my goal. Before the start of the exam tests, I always question whether I can accomplish A-grade and whether the goal is realistic. Through that analysis, I able to determine the kind of grade I will attain.
- Relevant - Getting good grades is relevant. A-grade matter to me because I have to base my future career from the grades I get. I also believe that getting good grades meaning attaining the skills needed for my future career. Therefore, I am always in control of my goals and makes sure that I put enough effort.
- Timely - Good grades goal should be timely. I have to acquire an A-grade throughout my study years. After that, grades will not be my goal. To ensure that I am not late to get my intended grades, I plan two months before the exam tests. That way, I am always prepared to tackle any challenge.
