Introduction
Gender development in social representation is significant in the display of societal attitudes, perceptions, talent cultivation, conceptualization difference and socio-structural opportunities encountered by men and women. Occupational distribution on gender representation is cultivated differently in various professional with a majority of the professions perceiving to have masculine and feminine distinct roles that each camp is socially acceptable to conduct or partake. Theoretically, social cognitive in gender representation in media for both men and women have over the years gained hyper-traditional positioning on the capabilities, roles, personality traits, as well as aspirations. Molding of female characters in movies or television shows in mainstream media has over the years show the societal perception of women and gender stereotypic cultivations in making and building the feminist beliefs and expectations. Representation of women in media has over the years being used to build the male characters as well as other antagonist roles in any movie or television series or shows. This paper will discuss the representation of women and other gender issues affecting the female characters in the Pilipino TV show "Wild Flower" and the Mexican "Lady from Vendaval". Through the review of women studies, this paper will evaluate the gender issues depicted by the female characters in both television shows to show the implication of women representation in media in the modern age.
In the TV show "Wild Flower" female representation of the protagonists and antagonist characters portray different issues affecting women in the Filipino community. The main themes include oppression, discrimination, sexism, and gender roles among others to build and show the representation of women in stereotypical portrayal and imaging. The main character Maya Savado playing as Lily Cruz or Ivy Aguas shows the position help be women in the Philippines society when in power and possession of money and social influence. From the onset of the televisions show Lily Cruz is brought up in a humble but happy family through the family suffer misfortunes owing to the gender sexism of her mother by Raul. Emilia Ardiente shows the underrepresentation and misuse of women in power. Although, from an overview eye Emilia seems like better placed in the society making a critical analysis of her life as a politician and as a woman in the society her voice is insignificant to the decision making the process of the governance system of the town. Camia Cruz (Sunshine Cruz) plays a role to show the representation of common women in the society. She suffers from sexual abuse and even faces life-threatening situations for speaking up for the rights of her fellow women who are oppressed in the society. In the entire movie, the stereotypical portrayal of women in the community shows that women are still lagging behind in media representation. Although Lily Cruz/Ivy Aguas has gained a significant position in the society, she is facing a lot of criticism and discrimination from the greed of Julio Ardiente.
On the other hand, representation of female characters in the Lady from Vendaval shows that Marcela Morales (Ariadne Diaz) faces social discrimination for earning the hereditary estate of her late parents. The town mayor participates in the oppression of Marcela because of the stereotypic imaging of women in the Mexican society of the day. Other women worth power position like Octavia Cotilla and Silvana Castelo are not in a better position in the society because they are also facing discrimination by the male characters in the story. The underrepresentation of women in the Lady from Vendaval shows the continued miss-portrayal of the feminine gender in the media development of characters.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the representation of gender in the media field to portray the stereotypic portrayal and imaging of men and women the majority of the television shows, documentaries, and movies.
