Effective communication is a vital element that people need to keep in mind whenever they intend to maintain their close ties with friends and family as well as running a successful business. Ones way of communication can determine whether an individual is an introvert or extrovert. Self-concept, perception, and emotions have the ability to affect interpersonal communication negatively.
Self-concept refers to the ideas one holds concerning himself or herself (Lynch, 2014). It illustrates how people perceive themselves either in a positive or negative manner. These notions include one's sexual partialities, academic cognizance, cultural identity, character, and physical features. your communication is affected by your self-concept (Relationship between Self-Concept, Self-Esteem & Communication - Video & Lesson Transcript | Study.com). Most social scientists argue that self-concepts usually reflect how an individual relates with those around him/her. Communication with others significantly hinges on how a person equates himself or herself to others, the environment, personal concerns, and the people around. Self-perception refers to how people come to understand their attitudes and beliefs based on their behavior. It is an idea one has regarding himself. It can affect ones communication skills in a negative or positive manner depending on how they interpret themselves (Wright, n.d.). One's perception will also influence other people on a given thing or issue. It will determine how you pass judgments on others.
Finally self-emotional refers to a person's feelings towards a thing or people following their experiences. Being emotional is a great hindrance to proper communications. Strong negative emotions in most cases have severe impacts on both listening and speaking aspects of communication hence leading to miscommunication and hurt feelings of the other parties (Wider, 2007). It can make one lash out and say some absurd things to others. Emotions can also lead to distortion of information hence breaks most relationships.
