Introduction
One of the major political scientists in the United States wrote a book called "our kids" that explains the growing chasm between the people living in college-educated Americans and high school educated Americans. According to Brooks (2015), about 10% of the children born by the college graduates grow up in the households of single parents. Currently, single parenting has become a common issue for most of the people especially young adults. On the other hand, about 70% of the children are born by the high school graduates. Also, in the 1960s and 1970s the non-college educated and college educated families behaved similarly, but since then their behaviors have changed.
In the current world, the parents who have graduated from college tend to spend more time with their students as compared to the high school graduates. The high school graduates tend to spend more time with their friends and relatives instead of their children. The high school educated parents also talk less to their children, go with them to church less, read to them less, encourage them less in different areas, and spend less time with them as they engage in the developmental activity. However, for children to perform well in school, they need support from their parents.
Putnam and his team also profiled some of the representative figures from every social class. However, profiles from the high school educated individuals are horrific. Different examples are explaining the education problem. For David, he only sees his mother occasionally. His father is also absent since after he had dropped out of school, he dated several women who had drug problems and this made him end in prison. David attended about seven elementary schools and ended in house arrest and getting a girl pregnant. Kyla's mom, on the other hand, married an abusive man but lost her children's custody after getting divorced. In the article, there is also Elijah who was brought up in a violent neighborhood.
All the above children examples are what happens in the current society. The stories can make an individual have sympathy for the children, but it is not that better policy and money are missing. The truth is that norms do not exist in the current society. The health society is determined with the virtues and habits of its citizens since people do not have rules and codes that dictate them on what activities to perform daily.
The best way to solve the issue of horrific profiles of high school educated America is by reintroducing norms. The first step of this process needs a moral vocabulary. The reason is that the norms were not destroyed since individuals have bad values. Instead, they were destroyed using the plague of nonjudgmental. The next step of reintroducing norms is by holding people responsible for their actions. Some of the questions that one can as the people born in chaotic situations is if they live for themselves or their children; if they are in bondage desires or have self-control freedom; and whether they live for long-term good or short-term pleasure. The last step is holding everybody responsible since America is not a country where the educated have virtues while the less educated are irresponsible. Therefore, having norms will play an essential role in making people behave well in society since every parent love their children and everyone struggle, but then we require standards and ideals in guiding the way.
