Introduction
Effective communication entails a reciprocal sharing of information either oral, non-verbal and written information following a standard set of rules. In most of the cases, when it comes to communication with offenders, it is essential to maintain connection following the standard set of rules to ensure a successful outcome (Brantingham & Kinney, 2017). In criminal justice, especially interaction with offenders, effective communication is critical to provide that the involved law enforcement individual (police officer) understand the circumstances surrounding the incident as well as make his intentions clear. Trust is an essential component in criminal justice; however, building trust is made possible through effective communication with offenders. Also, effective communication plays a substantial role in ensuring the construction of a proper relationship especially in the event of law enforcement.
Moreover, within the frameworks of effective communication use of non-verbal communication is imperative since it portrays on the responses. In cases where non-verbal communication (such as warm facial expression, eye-contact, and head nods) is effectively used there are chances of proper and productive dialogue which is a way that helps build a relationship, trust, and develop a significant outcome. Communicating effectively with offenders also offers an opportunity for transparency especially in solving surrounding problems, along with ensuring that messages being passed to the offender is understood and delivering a paramount progression. For example, in cases of ineffective communication between a law enforcement officer and an offender, one may feel as if the officer is less interested and unresponsive which could lead to harm than good.
Primary Responsibilities of a Correctional Officer
Although the specifics of the responsibilities of a correctional officer may vary by situations of places of employment, all correctional officers are responsible for law enforcement duties within the confines of the institution they are working as well as according to criminal law. In a broad description, maintain control and security to the offenders is the responsibility of correctional officers. However, when working with an offender either in federal or provisional systems, a correctional officer is responsible for various activities. First, a correctional officer is responsible for enforcing rules and keeping order especially by maintaining security through settling disputes between offenders or inmates as well as present disturbances. The enforcement of regulations may involve punishment, such as a loss of privileges. Second, a correctional officer is responsible for overseeing and supervising the daily activities of offenders by ensuring they obey the rules. Also, the correctional officers escort inmates or offenders to medical facilities, as well as courtrooms (Ricciardelli, 2016). A correctional officer is responsible for reporting the conduct of offenders and ensuring that they aid in rehabilitation and counseling of offenders. When working with an offender, a correctional officer helps them during rehabilitation by organizing advice and scheduling inspections.
Tactical Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Verbal Judo
In the detail of tactical communication, it involves military or enforcement communications through which a sort of information (such as military intelligence and military orders) are conveyed from one person or command to another. In some of the happenings, tactical information can be expressed through verbal communication, auditory, visual, and written ways as long as communication is presented to the intended recipient. Currently, tactical information may include electronic means of communication. Similarly, in correctional institutions, conflict is healthy. Conflict resolution in correctional institutions involve the use of a cognitive-behavioral approach and helps ensure better communication. It helps improve negotiation methods, as well as prevent ongoing or occurrence of any conflict. On the other hand, verbal judo is defined as the ability to use individual words with the aim of self-defense. It involves the use of body language and a given choice of words as a mean or de-escalating a volatile situation before it escalates into physical violence (Miller, 2008).
Benefits of Using Tactical Communication and Principles of Direct Supervision with Offenders
Correspondingly, tactical communication is beneficial in the context of a correctional institution and dealing with offenders. In cases where a tactical discussion is relevant, it helps a correctional officer think effectively and quickly about an occurrence especially in volatile situations. Moreover, it is beneficial since it ensures effective communication while avoiding any form of misunderstanding. In consideration to the involvement of principles of direct supervision with offenders, the entail maintaining of justice and fairness to the offenders by ensuring that they are treated fairly by making sure that in case an offender reports an issue, they are treated fairly and respectfully. Also, effective communication and control are a principle of supervision when dealing with offenders since the aim is to enhance the correction of their habits into better individuals (Miller, 2008). On the other hand, the safety of offenders is a principle of supervision with offenders. Although the policies of direct control with offender might differ in correctional institutions, it is critical to consider them.
Handling a Situation using Verbal Judo Technique
Nonetheless, in explanation of what and how I would handle a situation with the use of verbal judo communication technique. I would make sure that the case remains uninterpreted and instruct the offenders to stay calm. Also, I would ensure that every involved inmate understands the importance of communicating as well as eliminate any necessary conflict which will provide a single point of contact.
However, in the event of charging an offender with misconduct, I would submit the type 2 report "officer records information and takes action." In the detail of this type of report, the officer in is involved in taking action which may entail arresting the offender and charging them. Also, I would submit the type 3 report; "where officer becomes part of the scenario." In this scenario, it involves pursuing and subduing the subject as well as taking the necessary actions to mitigate the situation; however, other circumstances apply.
Conclusion
In the context of correctional institutions and criminal law, the relationship between correctional officers and offenders is fundamental especially in ensuring successful outcomes. One of the significant factors is effective communication which plays a vital role in mitigating events of damage and reducing unnecessary conflict (Glover et a., 2014). Since offenders are always aggressive and passive, if there is ineffectiveness in communication, damage could happen which leads to the importance of communicating effectively with offenders to ensure there is no misunderstanding. In other dispositions, the responsibilities and communication are critical since it maintains proper operation in criminal justice.
Misconduct Report for Scenario
First, it is critical to understand that calmness is the key to proper communication especially with the use of verbal judo. In this scenario, I would remain calm and designate one inmate to speak. Through this, I would ensure that eliminate conflicting messages and provide a single point of contact between the involved offenders (Adam Zapple #987 654 567 and Stan Bymee #767 546 322). Also, this would eliminate the chances of confusion or elimination.
Second, I would eliminate unnecessary conflict by making sure I exclude uninvolved individual and asking them to cooperate and remain calm as this will help remove the involved offender from the particular incident that could escalate the situation at hand. Since only the two offenders are involved, I would instruct them to adhere to the instruction and explain their reasons for what they did.
Finally, I would make the individual understand that is important to follow instruction and avoid compromising safety in an attempt to diffuse a situation. Safety is a priority, and through verbal judo, it helps maintain security as well as effective communication.
