Introduction
The certainty that Finance and Investment plays a significant role in shaping the world around us has never been more perceptible. Considering the interrelationship between Finance, governments, and business investments, it is almost impossible for anyone not to be fascinated to acquire more knowledge about the industry (Brown, Beekes, and Verhoeven 2011, pp.96-172). From a young age, I discovered that I had a passion for the field as I was a rational child who was always fascinated by numbers and calculations. Later on, my passion inspired me to contemplate about the significance and role of Finance and Investment in the global economy, so I decided that I would pursue a Finance-related course in college.
I am currently studying Accounting and Finance, and I have procured a strong foundation of knowledge across the Finance sector through these studies. During my two years of studying Accounting and Finance, some of my favourite units included Financial and Accounting theory, Taxation, Human Resource Management, Quantitative Methods in Accounting and Finance, and International Macroeconomics and Financial Markets. These units enabled me to attain an average score of 54.6 and 56.8 in my second year and the first year respectively. Other than gaining knowledge on Finance and Investment from my school studies, I choose to expand my knowledge in the role of Accounting and Finance in the world's economy by extensively reading some of the best Finance magazines such as 'The Economist' and 'Financial Times' which have valuable information that relates to Finance.
As an addition to my academic interest, I have equipped myself with some working experience in the Finance sector to advance my knowledge. I worked as an intern at a Medical company where I acquired and expanded my knowledge in the Finance sector as I was appointed the responsibilities of collecting, classifying and filing of the invoice of the company. I also interned at a bank where I was accountable for four guiding customers through the banking process and providing them with solutions to their banking questions and problems. As a Finance intern at the bank, some of my other duties included providing customers with the knowledge required to use self-service machines and the online banking system. Most of the time, I assisted customers who were planning to travel abroad by guiding them on foreign currency exchange and offering them with suggestions of Visa Cards that would meet their needs. My duties as an intern equipped me with the necessary knowledge required to advise customers on how to handle their business when it comes to finances by offering them alternative suggestions and also empowered me to develop and enhance my customer service skills. Having experienced how Finance is essential in my position as an intern, I am elevated by the possibility of acquiring further knowledge of the Finance sector through further studies.
I believe that undertaking a postgraduate degree at the Queen Mary University of London will enable me to upgrade my career a level by empowering me with added skills that are essential and necessary in the Finance sector. Additionally, a postgraduate in Finance and Investment will aid in sculpturing my career path since I will be specialising in what interests me the most, that is being Finance and Investment. Besides, I will be able to invest in my personal development as I will develop skills that I will apply in my daily life such as research and writing, organisation, and time management. I believe that investing in myself will bring out a better version of me (Lindsay, Breen and Jenkins 2002, pp.309-327).
The main reason as to why I would like to apply for a postgraduate specifically in Finance and Investment is that I believe I will gain competitive advantage necessary in the growth and development of my career in Finance and Investment in any business environment. Other than that, I will get to learn about the practical side of the theory of Finance and also expand my perception on the professional principles and practises in Finance and Investment. In addition to that, I hope to develop an analytical capacity and an all-rounded skill set that will contribute to my career success in the future. Lastly, I look forward to the acquisition and development of research techniques and skills that will be relevant during my pursuit four an even higher academic qualification in Finance and Investment.
Apart from gaining advanced knowledge in the Finance sector, a postgraduate in Finance and Investment would be a fit since both my current studies and work experience are relevant to the course. To begin with, in financial investing, financial statements usually are used to obtain the necessary information required in the evaluation and analysis of a company's financial status. With a background in Accounting and Finance, I am able to apply the knowledge in Finance and Investment. Moreover, my familiarity with accounting means that I will be able to evaluate assets, determine the risks and calculate profitability. These skills are critically important as I will apply them in every aspect of my postgraduate degree.
From my degree in Accounting and Finance, I have developed academic skills that would relate to a postgraduate degree in Finance and Investment. These academic skills would be useful and necessary four budget handling since I will be focusing on Investments and Finances. In addition to these academic skills, I have developed the ability to think logically when making finance-related decisions and also while analysing financial issues, and I know that this will come in handy in the future as Finance and Investment require constant problem solving and financial predictions (Heckman and Rubinstein 2001, pp.145-149).
As an ambitious student, I also possess personal skills that will relate to my study as a postgraduate in Finance and Investments that I am looking forward to pursuing. Firstly, I am an organised person who takes time management seriously. This is important since I will be in control of several responsibilities in my Finance and Investment career. My high level of organisation and time management will help me keep and meet deadlines, and track transactions in order to fulfil my duties effectively. Similarly, through working as an Accounting and Finance intern, I spent most of my time problem-solving by talking to customers: this enabled me to gain communication skills that I plan to put to use in my postgraduate degree and career as interpersonal skills are effective when it comes to networking. Lastly, during my school years, I learned how to be a valuable leader by learning about the important leadership skills required while making decisions (Robles 2012, pp.453-465).
My future career goal is to work in an investment company as the head financial manager. I believe that my knowledge in Finance and Investment will enable me to work effectively and make the right decisions as the head financial manager (Richardson 2006, pp.159-189). As a financial manager, I hope that I will be able to make a real impact in the finance sector by making use of all the skills and knowledge pertaining to the world of finance.
Thank you very much for your time to scrutinize my personal statement. I look forward to hearing from you.
